Kevin Feige Confirms Rights to ‘Daredevil’ Have Reverted Back to Marvel Studios

Confirmed by Kevin Feige, President of Production at Marvel Studios, the live-action film rights to Daredevil have reverted back to Marvel Studios.

Newsarama caught up with Feige at an Iron Man 3 press event and asked him if Marvel studios now had the rights to Daredevil, to which he simply replied “Yes.”

Remember that time (2003) when 20th Century Fox adapted Marvel Comics’ Daredevil for the big screen with Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner, and Michael Clarke Duncan? Yeah – while it wasn’t as disastrous as other early Marvel comic book movies like Hulk or The Punisher, Daredevil was still a misfire for Fox, who had hoped they could channel Sony’s success with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

Fox had planned to make another Daredevil film in order to retain rights to Marvel’s blind superhero, but after a failed attempt with director David Slade, the studio was facing a ticking clock. Director Joe Carnahan got involved and pitched a hard-boiled,’70s take on the character, but that fell through as well.

Fox then requested an extension and there were even rumors of Fantasy Football-esque trades involving Silver Surfer and Galactus, but it would appear that Marvel wisely refused to extend the cutoff date and have now regained one of their premiere superheroes.

If you recall, Fox faced a similar situation with the Ghost Rider property, and quickly moved Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance into production. I think we all know how that turned out. It’s for the best that these properties go back to Marvel Studios, who can then incorporate more characters into their cinematic universe.

So what’s this mean? Well, now that Daredevil is firmly under the control of Marvel Studios and Disney, we can reasonably assume the character will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in future Avengers films or as the star of his own film. The character has made numerous guest appearances in Avengers comics and joined the squad as part of Brian Michael Bendis’ New Avengers, so it’d be completely reasonable to see him suit up with Stark and the gang at some point.

While watching The Avengers last summer, I wished that Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Spider-Man would have dropped in on that epic New York City brawl with the Chitauri – representing Hell’s Kitchen, Harlem, and Queens while kicking serious alien ass. Now, we’re one step closer to my dream. What do you think? Are you ready for a new Daredevil movie?
