Jessica Chastain & Michael Caine Join Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’

Christopher Nolan has been assembling quite the cast in recent weeks for his 2014 sci-fi film Interstellar: Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway have already been confirmed for the movie, whose plot is vaguely described as “a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding,” but now we can add two names of equal or greater importance (depending on perspective) to that growing roll call of acting talent – Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine.

Chastain, a recent Oscar nominee for playing a terrorist-hunting CIA operative in the controversial true-life drama Zero Dark Thirty, has seen her career rise to stratospheric heights since 2011 when she delivered standout performances in the acclaimed films Tree of Life, Take Shelter, and The Help – the latter performance earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

The addition of Caine to the cast of Interstellar comes as no surprise, as the venerated British acting legend has appeared in every Christopher Nolan film since he first played the loyal and resourceful butler Alfred Pennyworth in 2005’s Batman Begins.

Caine can be seen next in the magician heist thriller Now You See Me, which opens at the end of this month and will proceed to Eliza Graves with Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale. That film begins production next month. Meanwhile, Chastain has Guillermo Del Toro’s ghost story Crimson Peak with Emma Stone and Benedict Cumberbatch next on her dance card and will likely star in Nolan’s project after that film completes shooting.

Nolan is currently revising a screenplay written by his brother Jonathan Nolan and based on the time travel and wormhole theories of Caltech physicist and relativity expert Kip S. Thorne. Steven Spielberg was originally attached to direct Interstellar back in 2006, but his crowded schedule forced him to cede those duties to Nolan.

Interstellar will open in theaters on November 7, 2014.
