The GoD List: Comics For May 8, 2013
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “I am Iron Man” Henchman21, and “Stop Saying That” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of May 8, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I hope you all had a pleasant Free Comic Book Day, but there’s no rest around here. It’s another week and we’ve got another stack of new books for you to check out. This week has a whole heap of demons and monsters, with some good old fashioned mutants mixed in for good measure. But fear not, reading this week’s selections won’t make you a bad person. Quite the opposite, actually. The only thing that will make you a bad person is if you choose to ignore this week’s GoD List!

Issues

Uncanny Avengers #8 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Here’s the thing, for a long time I was not a fan of Daniel Acuna’s art. I looked at it, and I just saw big blobs of color that vaguely looked like superheroes. Okay, that may be a little harsh; let’s just say it didn’t connect with me. However, over the last few issues of Uncanny Avengers his art has grown on me. Perhaps it’s the added detail that he has seemed to add to his work. Perhaps I’m just seeing something that I was missing before. Whatever it is, Acuna’s art is now a big draw for me. Of course, the main draw remains the story of The Apocalypse Twins and their plan to destroy stuff, or something. Rick Remender has brought the magic that he created on Uncanny X-Force over to this series, crafting a deep character drama with explosive action. This is the kind of big, exciting story that you want to see in The Avengers, and I am loving it.

Chin Music #1 (Image Comics – $2.99) Who doesn’t like a good mix of horror and gangsters? If you’re looking for something a little dark this week, look no further than Chin Music #1. Chin Music is about a man named Shaw who is on the run and has somehow gone back in time to prohibition-era Chicago, where he runs into demons, gangsters, and the coppers. Writer Steve Niles is no stranger to taking horror comics to strange places, what with his work on 30 Days of Night and a whole host of other series. Add in what I sure to be some fantastic art by Tony Harris, and you have a winning combination. It’s good to see Harris back to releasing a lot of new material, between this and his JSA series over at DC. You’ve got an interesting premise with a fantastic creative team. What more do you want?

Grimm #1 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) Are you a fan of NBC’s Grimm? Well hey, Dynamite has the comic book for you. Based on a story by series co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, the series features all the characters you love from the show in an all-new adventure. And if you don’t like the show, give this a chance anyway. Maybe this will turn you on to it.

Trades

Hellblazer Vol. 5 (DC/Vertigo – $19.99) If there is one Hellblazer storyline that every comic reader should experience at some point, it’s the “˜Dangerous Habits’ arc collected in this volume. “˜Dangerous Habits’ marks the beginning of Garth Ennis’ legendary run on the series, and is the typical John Constantine story done as well as it has ever been done. In the story, John learns that he is dealing with lung cancer brought on by a lifetime of smoking, and all sorts of demons are coming to collect on all of John’s debts. There is a reason the story is so well regarded, and it’s mostly because it’s very good. The volume captures everything that is great about the character in one story. You get that story, plus the end of Jaime Delano’s run, and a few more stories. If you’ve never read Hellblazer before, this is the volume to pick up. Then you’ll want to come back for volume 6 when Ennis teams up with a little known artist named Steve Dillon. But I’ll get to that in a few months.

Empress Eve

Issues

Danger Girl Trinity #2 (of 4) (IDW Publishing – $3.99) Love me some Danger Girl! This is the second of four issues for this miniseries, which sees Abbey Chase, Sydney Savage, and Sonya Savage on an action-packed adventure. The covers by series co-creator J. Scott Campbell are enough to warrant a look and a print copy.

Damsels Mermaids #1 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) I love fairy tales, but one thing I always question is, what happens after the happily ever after? I picture favorites like Cinderella barefoot and pregnant, while the Prince has to go on Unemployment. Dynamite’s new series, Damsels Mermaids, tackles the beloved tale of The Little Mermaid to show what she’s been up to since she snagged her human Prince. Apparently, this series has her secluded, jaded, and angst-ridden, looking for danger. This one’s definitely worth a look.

Star Wars #5 (Dark Horse – $2.99) This is the next to last issue in the “In the Shadow of Yavin” story arc from the series written by Brian Wood. This title takes a look at the off-screen events between the first Star Wars movies. The title has gotten nothing but glowing reviews from our staff, so catch up on Star Wars now.

Quick Picks

Creepy Comics #12
Star Trek #20
Hellraiser: The Road Below, Vol. 1
