First Photo Of Paul Giamatti As The Rhino In ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’

BAADASSSSS!   |

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Marc Webb, the director of next year’s web-slingin’ sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has done a stand-out job keeping us posted on the production of the film via Twitter. Recently we’ve seen the first photos of Jamie Foxx as the villain Electro. Inevitably we would soon get a glimpse of Paul Giamatti as the second half of the movie’s super-powered baddie tag team, the Rhino.

True to form, Webb has now granted us the first photo of Giamatti in character and in action as the Rhino. You can check it out here below.

Amazing Spider-Man 2

He looks angry. No one likes a pissed-off Paul Giamatti. Remember how much he hates drinking f***ing Merlot?

If the first photo of a creepy blue Foxx was any indication, Webb and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner have dispensed with the classic look of the villains in favor of something more grounded and visually dynamic. Giamatti, on the other hand, looks like the kind of foaming mad bald dude you would find sitting in the stands of a Little League baseball game, getting drunk on cheap supermarket beer and shouting obscene insults at the umpire. There is nothing about this picture that screams “Rhino” or even “super-powered bad guy,” though that will likely change once filming is completed and the VFX crew gets to do their stuff. Giamatti just being in this movie gives me more hope for the sequel because the first Amazing Spider-Man from last year was the textbook definition of a lackluster summer superhero movie, and that’s putting it mildly.

The Rhino was the creation of Spider-Man co-creator and writer Stan Lee and artist John Romita and first appeared in October 1966 in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #41. His alter ego is Eastern European thug Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich. In the comics the Rhino has traded blows with the Hulk, the Punisher, and Deadpool. Though always seen as one of Spidey’s least intelligent foes, he has kept up the bad fight for over four decades. Something tells me we will always have the Rhino, in the comics that is.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2, 2014.
