Fans of the popular Cartoon Network animated series The Clone Wars were pretty upset when it was announced that the show was being cancelled, but we knew that they were also already planning a new Star Wars animated series to replace it and possibly fill that void.
The show will be called Star Wars Rebels and it is coming to Disney XD, currently planned for a fall of 2014 arrival.
Continue below for more and to see a video of the team working on the new show discussing what they can about it.
The show will start will a one-hour premiere episode penned by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes), who will also act as an executive producer on the show. Kinberg was brought into the Star Wars mix last November when we found out that he and Lawrence Kasdan might be working on the screenplays for Star Wars Episode VIII and Star Wars Episode IX. We later found out that they would instead be working on the planned standalone movies also being developed.
Not much is known about Star Wars Rebels yet, only that it will take place in the two decades between Episode III and Episode IV when the “Empire is fortifying its hold on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion is taking shape.” The time frame is one that has not yet been covered on the screens big or small, which means you’ll likely be seeing lots and lots of familiar faces.
Speaking of familiar faces, The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni is also involved with the new series, this time as an executive producer along with Kinberg and Greg Weisman (Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man).
You can expect to see your first real peek at Star Wars Rebels come out of this year’s Star Wars Celebration Europe in Germany, which is running from July 26th to July 28th.
