A new movie is being developed based on Fables, the popular comic book series from Bill Willingham.
The movie is being developed by David Heyman, who was behind the Harry Potter movies, and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films. Nikolaj Arcel is attached to direct from a screenplay written by Jeremy Slater.
Arcel is a Danish filmmaker whose credits include 2004’s King’s Game and 2012’s A Royal Affair. He also penned the screenplay for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the 2009 original which starred Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. Slater has worked on the Fantastic Four reboot.
For those unfamiliar with Fables, it takes place in a world where fairy tale creatures and characters are all very real, many of which living amongst us in New York City. Unlike most fairy tales, this is a very dark world, and you probably shouldn’t let your kids check it out.
It’s not the first time an attempt has been made at bringing Fables to life, either. Warner Brothers and the Jim Henson Company (that would have been…interesting) were in the early stages of development back in 2004, and there was a time when ABC was going to turn it into a series. Thankfully for all of us that did not happen, and ABC went on to make their fairy tale series Once Upon A Time.
Along with Y: The Last Man, I’ve always thought Fables would be best as a series on a channel like HBO or Starz. For the moment, however, it would appear that both are heading to the big screen instead with this news and the news that Y: The Last Man has found a director and is progressing steadily.
What do you think of a Fables movie? Who should star?
