Can you blame an assassin if she were literally created for such work and have no recollection of her actions afterwards? This is the moral conundrum issued in Top Cow’s Aphrodite IX #2. Written by Matt Hawkins with illustrations from Stjepan Sejic, we are thrust into the harsh, violent and dystopian future earth alongside Aphrodite as she tries to find her place in the new world.
The struggle continues between Marcus’ race of genetically altered humans and their cybernetic, humanoid enemies led by Executor Chronos. Unfortunately for Marcus and his people, their new ally, Aphrodite IX””the green-haired female powerhouse with no memory of her past””is in fact an assassin by design; and what Marcus and Aphrodite don’t realize is that she is being controlled by Chronos’ new ally and Aphrodite’s old handler, Robert J. Burch. Already unaware of killing Marcus’ father, the king, Aphrodite is on a new mission that could very well bring on the collapse of the kingdom.
Hawkins presents an excellent story in the second issue of Aphrodite IX. Honing in on the revelations made in the first issue, he provides more of an in depth look into the motives of both races””revealing governmental systems in place for both species as well as new characters in a timely manner. His writing style is laced with maturity and intellect, but never at the expense of the reader.
I was blown away by Sejic’s art in issue one and that fascination has not digressed one bit. His drawings have such a dark and realistic feel, with every feature””sentient or not””detailed to the highest degree. He does a brilliant job at maintaining the “humanity” of both races, while simultaneously making the differences subtly clear. The sophisticated illustrations blend perfectly with Hawkins’ similarly refined writing.
I’ve said it before: I am drawn to assassin stories. Thankfully, Aphrodite IX continues to exceed my expectations. This is definitely a comic worth targeting.
