This latest series opens with Baltimore’s friend and ally Mr. Hodge imprisoned by Judge Duvic. Hodge becomes the target of Duvic’s attempt to locate Baltimore to “cleanse” him of the evil that he believes has infested the man. The tale of the Judge’s dark past begins to unfold during his jail cell inquest, revealing a hell-bent mentor in the priesthood and a lifetime of horrific trials and torture.
A struggle breaks out in the prison when a vengeful face from the past arrives and aids in Hodge’s escape. Knowing that Judge Duvic’s obsession with Lord Baltimore has reached a destructive pinnacle, Hodge uses his fleeing words to arrange a meeting between the two men in the approaching weeks.
Complementing this story perfectly is the Mignola-esque artwork of Ben Stenbeck (Living with the Dead.) His visuals lend an emotional edge to the living in this issue and a surreal void to the undead, creating an atmosphere that elevates each of the scenes to something much more disturbing than those found in your typical historical horror comic.
I look forward to learning more about Judge Duvic’s complex character in upcoming issues and am especially curious to see how the events of his pending face-off with Baltimore develop!
