The GoD List banner

Each and every week, I, “Man of Steel” Henchman21, and “Woman of Steel” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of June 19, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

We’re already running behind and we don’t have a second to lose, so let’s get to the gangsters, angles, zombies, robots, aliens, and the rest of the stars of this weeks GoD List!

Issues

100 Bullets Brother Lono

100 Bullets: Brother Lono #1 (of 8) (DC/Vertigo Comics – $3.99) Brian Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and the rest of the original team behind 100 Bullets reunite to tell another story set in their award-winning series. And what a story they’ve reunited for. Brother Lono follows the further adventures of Lono, the meanest and dirtiest of the Minutemen. The end of 100 Bullets left Lono thought for dead after being shot in the chest, but that’s not going to keep a bad man down. Now Lono is working in Mexico, possibly working on the right side of the law for once, but there’s no way that could be right. 100 Bullets may have gone on for a bit too long, but it remains one of the best series of the last 15 years and it’s exciting to be back in this world. Seeing this just makes me want to go back and read the series all over again, and I hope this isn’t the only miniseries we get. Azzarello and Risso have shown numerous times that they make a great team, and I am down for anything they want to do. I’m just extra glad they’ve decided to return to 100 Bullets.

Batwoman #21 (DC Comics – $2.99) Francesco Francavilla on art. That is all you need to know. Buy it. Read it. Love it.

Revival #11 (Image Comics – $2.99) I hope you’re all reading an enjoying Revival from Image Comics, because if you’re not, you’re missing out on a great horror comic. Tim Seeley and Mike Norton are telling a different kind of zombie story, even though there aren’t really any zombies in it. Each issue expands on the central mystery of why a bunch of people in a small Wisconsin town returned to life, as well as examining what would happen to the world if an amazing event like this occurred. Each issue catches new readers up to date, so don’t be afraid to jump in at any point. Now’s as good a time as any.

Age of Ultron #10 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Angela shows up and maybe something else surprising happens. I’ll let someone else tell me what happens.

Trades

Batgirl Robin Year One (DC Comics – $24.99) There are a bunch of solid collections out this week, including Saga Vol. 2, the final volume (Vol. 6) of Sweet Tooth, and Mind the Gap Vol. 2. However, the book you want to look out for is Batgirl Robin Year One and the reason you want to check this out is for the art by Javier Pulido and Marcos Martin. When these two series originally came out, Pulido and Martin were not the big names that they are today, but boy howdy have they blown up. They both share a similar style featuring clean lines, expressive faces, and dynamic action and these two series are perfect examples of their work. Batgirl Robin Year One collects two separate miniseries looking at the early days of two of Batman’s sidekicks. Each story features a ton of action, and of course amazing art. If you love the work of these two artists, don’t miss out on this chance to see some of their earlier work.

Empress Eve

Baltimore: The inquisitor (Dark Horse – $3.50) I LOVE me some Baltimore! I’m a big fan of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy universe, but there’s something about the Lord Baltimore character that I just can’t get enough of. While he’s typically on the move slaying vamps and other preternatural creations, I enjoy watching Baltimore do the most mundane of activities, like take some tea. In The inquisitor, we’ll learn the origin of Judge Duvic, who’s been relentlessly pursuing Baltimore as Baltimore is on his own quest for vengeance. Definitely looking forward to diving into this story; plus, artist Ben Stenbeck and colorist Dave Stewart are amazing and perfectly hook you into Mignola’s universe.

The X-Files Season 10 #1 (IDW Publishing – $3.99) The X-Files returns!!! This new on-going comic book series from IDW takes a page from the Buffy The Vampire Slayer book and continues the popular long-running television series, which ended in 2002, and with an all-new season. This first issue launches Season 10 and sees Agents Mulder and Scully reunite to investigate more extraterrestrial activities and conspiracies. The TV series creator Chris Carter serves as executive producer, which lends The X-Files Season 10 some credibility. Fans of The X-Files (they’re out there) will definitely love this one.

For years they investigated the paranormal, pursued the “monsters of the week,” and sought the truth behind extraterrestrial activity, along with the grand conspiracy surrounding it rooted deep within their own government. But when AGENTS MULDER and SCULLY reunite for a new, ongoing series that ushers THE X-FILES into a new era of technological paranoia, multinational concerns and otherworldly threats, it’ll take more than a desire ‘to believe’ to make it out alive. The X-Files: Season 10 also sees creator Chris Carter return to the fold as Executive Producer!

Demeter (ComiXology Submit – $.99) This 31-page comic book short story is written and drawn By Becky Cloonan, who made me fall in love with her when she did the artwork for the Dracula (Illustrated Classics). In that book, she showed she can wonderfully capture the ominousness of the sea, which she does again in her creation, Demeter, which is being released digitally through ComiXology Submit (the indie creator portion of the digital comics giants company). The 31-page story, which can be found in Cloonan’s Ink and Thunder series, is only $0.99 and centers on a fisherman’s wife whose secrets begin to come to the surface. The sea itself plays a large role in the tale, which threatens the happiness of this handsome young couple. Just a glimpse of this comic instantly made me want to read it. Definitely seek this out (it’s also available through WereHouse.ca).
