Issues
Lazarus #1 (Image Comics – $2.99) Lazarus is the new series from Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, who teamed up to great success on Gotham Central and look to recapture the magic that made that series so great. This time, they’re venturing off into a futuristic story of privileged families who control the world. One family is protected by someone named Forever Carlyle, and she takes her job seriously. Seriously enough that she’s ready to die on the job, which is just what happens in this issue. Fortunately, death doesn’t seem to be an issue for Forever, since she is a Lazarus. If the team behind this book doesn’t get you excited, well then you need to go back and track down Gotham Central. Or just pick this up, because I can guarantee that this is going to be an amazing comic. It’s the right blend of action and suspense with a unique setting and is sure to be another hit for Image.
Atomic Robo: Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #1 (of 5) (Red 5 Comics – $3.50) Meanwhile, we’ve got the first issue of the eighth volume of Atomic Robo. This time, we get a full-fledged adventure with Robo taking on his most hilarious arch-enemy, Dr. Dinosaur. Every issue in the past that has featured the god Doctor has been tons of fun, and I can’t wait to see what happens with him in a full series. Atomic Robo remains one of the best series that not enough people are reading. Writer Brian Clevenger always brings plenty of humor and action to the series and artist Scott Wegener’s bright, energetic style is the perfect match for the story. If this is your first Atomic Robo series, you’re in for a treat.
Uncanny #1 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) Let’s start off with a quick look at the solicitation for this comic, in case you’ve never heard of it before:
“Weaver is unique, or so he thinks. Born with an uncanny ability, he can steal other people’s skills – their memories, abilities, and expertise – for a limited time. A man with a power like that could change the world; but as a professional gambler, con-man, and thief-for-hire, Weaver prefers to look out for number one. That is, until he finds himself drawn into a dangerous game of international intrigue where the rules keep changing, the players are hidden… and the first thing he stands to lose is his life. And maybe, just maybe, he isn’t so unique after all…”
Sounds pretty intriguing to me. If fact, it kind of sounds like an 80’s action show, which is something I’m always down for. Writer Andy Diggle is no stranger to action series, having put his stamp on the genre with The Losers, so we know he can handle this kind of thing. I’m always looking for a comic that looks to do something different and I’m curious to see what Diggle does with this set-up. It seems like Diggle can do pretty much anything he wants with this series, and the only limit is his imagination. Hopefully, this will live up to my expectations.
Batman/Superman #1 (DC Comics – $3.99) Speaking of expectations, here we get the first DC work for longtime Marvel writer Greg Pak, and he’s only taking on the two biggest characters in DC stable. Pak is set to tell the story of the first meeting of Batman and Superman in the New 52, which sets him up to put his stamp on them. It looks like the series will be taking the pair over to Earth 2, which should lead to plenty of action. Pak has spent a lot of time at Marvel, crafting long runs on The Hulk, Incredible Hercules, and plenty of other series, and he has built up a very loyal fan-base, which I’m sure DC is hoping will follow him over. Joining Pak on art detail is Jae Lee, coming off his work on Before Watchmen: Ozymandias. Lee has a very unique style, but I’m not sure if it’s suited for these characters. I’ll be curious to see what tone the series has and how Lee’s works out. There’s a big risk/reward here, I just hope it all works out.

So, I’m sitting here waiting for my toenail polish to dry as I write this, because it’s Graduation Week here at Doom Headquarters as our little princess prepares to say farewell to high school! And as I predicted, I’m crazy busy with things like searching for missing tassels, party planning, accommodating out-of-town family members, and running to dress shops and dry cleaners, as well as bagging candy and favors. I should be asleep right now, as tomorrow is the actual graduation ceremony and I have to stay awake through 500 students’ names being called out. But, instead prepping comic reviews and choosing which of this week’s comic book releases I want to read once all this graduation stuff is finally over and I have my regular life back. So, I have to keep it super brief this week, but I do want to mention that in the very few spare moments I’ve had recently, I’ve been reading Man of Steel: The Official Movie Novelization by Greg Cox and I love love love it. Granted I didn’t really enjoy the ending of Man Of Steel, I did love all the stuff on Krypton and all the scifi elements in the film, so the novelization really fleshes out all the details that didn’t quite come across on the big screen. Plus, Cox, who’s known for his excellent two-part Star Trek novel series The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, was the perfect writer for this novelization. Damn, I really want to finish reading this now! Ok, but no, I must choose my comics for the week, so here they are…
