‘Game Of Thrones’ Fan Art Tackles Powerful ‘A Storm of Swords’ Battle

Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Read no further if you watch the HBO series Game of Thrones but have not yet read the books. One of the greatest chapters from George R.R. Martin’s A Storm Of Swords has been rendered into sequential art, but the scene probably won’t be seen on the television series until Season 4. I will not be held responsible if you fail to heed my warning!

There, with that out of the way, let me say this A Storm of Swords fan art, by comic artist Jeff McComsey, is amazingly well done. Detailing the duel between Oberyn Martell, Prince of Dorne, called the Red Viper, and Gregor Clegane, nicknamed the Mountain because of his gargantuan size….it appears to be a very uneven fight from the start. I won’t get into too many details but the point is that Prince Oberyn volunteered to fight this massive warrior for personal reasons. Though both of these men are champions for another, they enter the battlefield with the express intention of killing their opponent in this trial by arms.

The main plot of the scene is, of course, displayed perfectly but the truly awesome part is how well the smaller parts of the story are worked into the panels. From the way the stable boy loses his arm (and part of his head on a backstroke) to the way the crowd of onlookers reacts to it. Even getting to see one of the grosser parts of the battle (where Tyrion vomits up his breakfast) helps seal the deal on this artist’s interpretation of the scene. I know it’s short but it delivers the essential parts of the story…even down to the repetition of Prince Oberyn’s insistence that Clegane admit to his wrongdoings. The tragic ending notwithstanding, this is an amazing battle that shows, again, how Martin is never afraid to deliver a fatal blow to a beloved character. The artist really nails it with the passion in Oberyn’s rhetoric and with the Mountain’s reply.

And speaking of the artist, Jeff McComsey (FUBAR, Jesus Hates Zombies) does wonderful work in the comic industry, which is displayed throughout his webpage Sequential Killustrations. Working as a freelance artist, he turns out quite a bit of original art that must be seen to be believed. He even has the original art for this Game of Thrones duel listed on Etsy, if you find yourself so inclined! Anyway, I hope you enjoy the art as much as I did, it was great to see someone so passionate about something and then act upon it.

Check out the 12-page adaptation below, and head on over to McComsey official website to see more of his amazing art.
