Vertigo Comics has released another look at Neil Gaiman‘s upcoming Sandman prequel, titled Sandman: Overture. Check out the preview here below.
During last July’s Comic-Con in San Diego, the DC imprint announced the prequel miniseries and gave a first look at the cover. J.H. Williams III will be doing the interior art for the miniseries, while Williams along with long-time Sandman cover artist Dave McKean, will provide the covers. At the time of the announcement, Gaiman revealed that he always had another Sandman story up his sleeve and that this new tale would be about the events that led up to Morpheus being captured (which is the premise of Sandman #1).
“This is the one story that we never got to tell,” Gaiman told The New York Times today. “In SANDMAN #1 Morpheus is captured somehow. Later on in the series, you learn he was returning from somewhere far, far away – but we never got to the story of what he was doing and what had happened. This is our chance to tell that story, and J.H. Williams III is drawing it. It’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”
Sandman: Overture will be published bi-monthly, with Sandman: Overture #1 scheduled for release on October 30th, 2013, and will be published digitally the same day. Also bi-monthly and alternating with the main Overture series will be a Special Edition series, which will contain deluxe issues that will include original scripts by Gaiman, additional concept art and sketches by Williams, Q&As with the creative team, and more. The Special Editions will be released starting this November.
We can expect more details on this prequel at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, as Gaiman, Williams, and McKean will appear during Vertigo’s 25th Anniversary panel (Gaiman will also be spotlighted at his own standalone panel). Also, the cover of the Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013 Souvenir Book contains all-new Sandman art by Dave McKean, which will also be featured on an official convention T-shirt, so be sure to hang on to your souvenir book and be on the lookout for that t-shirt.
