300: Rise Of An Empire Header

It feels like the sequel to 300 has been in the works forever, but we’re finally close to actually seeing the film, so Warner Bros. came to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday to show off 300: Rise of an Empire. On stage to talk about the film were director Noam Murro, and actors Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, and Sullivan Stapleton.

The panel started with an extended clip from the film, showing the origins of Xerses and the start of the war between Persia and the Greeks. That was followed up with a montage of the battle scenes from the movie, with plenty of sea borne action for the sequel.

Eva Green described her character of Artemisia as being fueled by revenge because her family was killed by Greeks. She also described this character as the toughest she has ever played. In the footage, you hear a voice over say that Artemisia sold her sold. The character is also the head of the Naval forces and is shown being vicious in battle.

Santoro talked about the diet that he had to go on to play Xerses, who walks around half naked for the whole movie, which included a lot of workouts and no junk food. He describes the character as not being black or white, and that the film will delve a lot into Xerses backstory. In the footage, we see Xerses before his major transformation, as he watches his father die. Though his father’s dying wish was for them to end the war with the Greeks, the bewitching Artemisia convinces the vulnerable grieving lad that vengeance against the Greeks is the way to go. But to beat their enemy, Artemisia explains that Xerses must become a god. We then got to see some of haunting details of what Xerses went through as he transforms from human to god, and then the consequences of these actions. In the end, we Xerses the way he looks in 300, as well as scenes of massive destruction to come.

Director Noam Murrow said that they have finished shooting the film, but are still working on the effects for it. This follow up was shot in the same way as the first one, and Murro got rid of all his green shirts once he was done shooting because of all the green screens needed to finish the effects.
