The major reveal at the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday was that director Joss Whedon‘s upcoming Avengers sequel would be titled The Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
Whedon himself come out onto the Hall H stage to introduce a title treatment teaser video that showed the Iron Man helmet morph into the head of the classic Avengers villain Ultron. This reveal immediately led to speculation on how Marvel would handle the villain in the sequel and if the story would be based on the recent Age Of Ultron comic book series.
Marvel Entertainment has released a post-panel video interview Marvel LIVE! did with Whedon, where the director explains that The Avengers: Age Of Ultron will not be based on the current comic book series, and that Ultron will actually have a different origin than the comics. Watch the 6-minute video interview here below.
A lot of people, because we called it Age of Ultron and there was a book, Age of Ultron just recently, assumed that was the storyline we are doing, which is not the case. We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron. And the other thing is, in the origin story, there was Hank Pym, so a lot of people assumed that he was going to be in the mix, but he’s not, because we’re basically taking the things from the comics for the movies that we need and can use. A lot of stuff has to fall by the wayside. Ultron was their chief villain when I read the book. He’s been the Avengers villain for so long. I was amazed anybody was surprised that it was going to be him in the movie. But we sort of are crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from the Avengers we already know about.
So, the story won’t follow the current Age Of Ultron comic book series, and Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, who was Ultron’s creator, won’t be a part of this story (the teaser video showing the Iron Man helmet makes it seem like Tony Stark will be his creator or at least the Iron Man’s armor will have something to do with Ultron’s creation).
Whedon is still writing the script for the sequel, and that the film will be darker and have a more science fiction element to it. When asked what Ultron will look like, Whedon said he’s a character who will be evolving, so there will be several iterations of him. Also, when asked if the film would be centered in one city, Whedon said it would be a global Avengers.
Filming begins around February/March of 2014 in London.
