‘Lemmy’ Director Working On Doc Of Boxing Champ and Raging Bull Jake LaMotta
  |

Former Middleweight Champion and colorful and controversial pugilist Jake LaMotta, best known to film going audiences for the gritty, hard-nosed bio pic that showcased his life, Raging Bull, is now the subject of a full-length feature documentary.

LaMotta, 92, is collaborating with Greg Olliver, best known for co-directing and producing Lemmy, the much-lauded film about the Motorhead frontman Ace of Spades, Lemmy Kilmister. Oliver also has projects such as a documentary about a WWII Commando and blues stalwart Johnny Winter in the works.

The LaMotta project, which already started filming in Arizona back in January of this year, will feature interviews with fellow athletes such as Mike Tyson, as well as actors, family, and friends, all whom are sure to give a keen insight to the complex and emotional boxer.

Most people only know of Jake LaMotta by way of Robert De Niro’s stellar, unrelentless, uncomfortable, and razorblade-sharp performance in the 1980 Martin Scorsese Academy Award-winning film Raging Bull. That film, which showcased a lot of the inner rage that made LaMotta tick, stands as one of the greatest films of all time in the modern cinematic age. Olliver has stressed that his documentary on the boxing champ is going to also show a side of the man that most people have never seen and added that LaMotta was “ready to talk.”

The still-to-be-named film is being produced independently through Olliver’s production company, Secret Weapon Films in New York City. Expected completion of the film should be at the end of this year with a final release date to be determined.

  1. Raging Bull is one of my favorite movies, and though I’m not really a boxing fan, I have high hopes for this documentary, which I’m surprised has taken this long to get made.
