Charlie Day Says Guillermo del Toro Envisioned Newt As A Villain In ‘Pacific Rim’ Sequel
  |  @   |

Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim proved to be more of a hit overseas than it did here in the States, and because of that, there is a slim chance that we could be seeing a sequel. But if we do indeed get a sequel, Del Toro would no doubt dip into the pool of ideas he had in store for this film – even though the ending of the first Pacific Rim suggests that the film was to be a one and done.

Now, Charlie Day has come out to talk about his character and how it was originally envisioned differently than what was seen on screen.

In an interview with Crave Online, Day told gave small tidbit about his character:

I remember when I first met with [Del Toro] that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film. But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I don’t think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea.

Day did have this Rick Moranis nuance when portraying Newt in Pacific Rim. It’s probably one of the reasons that I liked the film so much, aside from giant robots battling giant monsters. It certainly gave the film more life whenever Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba gave their less than stellar performances. But I like the idea that Newt could be the villain in the possible sequel. After what the character and his science partner, Hermann Gottleib (Burn Gorman), go through, it shouldn’t be out of the question.

But even if that doesn’t happen, Day hopes he and Gorman can be more involved in the next film:

“I’m hopeful that we get to drive a big punching robot,” Day said. “I think traditionally in those comics, sometimes the science guys put together a cheap, dorky version of one of the robots so maybe we’ll get to do something like that.

I’m hopeful that we get to drive a big punching robot. I think traditionally in those comics, sometimes the science guys put together a cheap, dorky version of one of the robots so maybe we’ll get to do something like that.

With the sequel very much a possibility, thanks in part to the international numbers, we could see Newt and Hermann battle giant monsters in a robot of their own or, even better yet, be one of the villains in the film.
