All it took was one tweet to confirm that Christopher McQuarrie will be directing Tom Cruise in the tentatively titled Mission: Impossible 5. And McQuarrie sent tweet out today.
The director had worked with Cruise in the modest hit Jack Reacher. Since then, there has been much speculation as to whether or not he would work with the actor again. Because of their working relationship on Reacher and the upcoming Edge of Tomorrow, plus the recently shelved Top Gun 2, it makes plenty of sense that McQuarrie be the one to sign on to direct the fifth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, which has spanned almost two decades.
This was all the director posted to his Twitter account:
Now that we know McQuarrie will direct, and Cruise is definitely signed on to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt, we still don’t know who will write the script, or if Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, and/or Jeremy Renner will return to reprise their respective roles, that remains to be seen.
While Reacher was a hit, McQuarrie has already established himself as an excellent screenwriter, having won the 1996 Academy Award for Best Screenplay for his work on The Usual Suspects. But he has yet to make his mark as a director, although I think his relationship with Cruise could help him figure the vision of the film. It should be interesting to see if he can follow up Mission: Impossible 5 with the bar already set so high by Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
So what do you think? Is McQuarrie the right man for the job?
