Periodically, events occur that cause one’s Facebook and Twitter feeds to blow up, whether it be an awards night, the Super Bowl, a political uprising – it’s something that everyone’s talking about.
Then there was the night that Sharknado aired on SyFy. On July 11, 2013, when the network’s original made-for-television disaster film debuted, oh man, people online were going nuts! #Sharknado was trending everywhere, and do you know why? Because it’s movie where a storm is coming to the southern California coast, bringing with it a tornado filled with man-eating sharks – a sharknado!
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the network would jump on its succeed and greenlight a sequel.
Sharknado 2: The Second One, which will also be produced by The Asylum, comes to SyFy in July 2014 and will be set in New York City. The title for the sequel was chosen through a Twitter poll, which ended up having 5,000 Twitter submissions.
Sharknado‘s debut and its two encore broadcasts brought in over 2.1 million total viewers, according to SyFy. The movie stars Ian Ziering, of original Beverly Hills 90210 fame, as beachside bar owner and former surfing champ Fin, who seemingly is the only person in the Los Angela area who can save people from the tornado of sharks. Tara Reid and her blank stare plays Fin’s ex-wife April, who resents the hell out of her ex because he’s just so caring about others, and thankfully so, or else she would have been dead within the first half hour.
Sharknado will air for the final time this summer on Thursday, August 22 at 7PM (ET/PT) on SyFy, as the lead into to the premiere of another SyFy original movie, Ghost Shark, at 9PM (ET/PT). According to the official synopsis, Ghost Shark is about a great white shark, tortured and killed by a fisherman, who returns as an unfriendly ghost to exact vengeance on the human race. The movie stars Mackenzie Rosman (7th Heaven) and Richard Moll (Night Court).
Here’s the Sharknado trailer… watch and enjoy the hell out of it and I’ll see you in New York City next July.
