Rumor: Emperor Palpatine Could Return In ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

Emperor Palpatine

Much to everyone’s disappointment, D23 Expo attendees and Star Wars fans were disappointed to hear nothing about the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII from Disney Chief Alan Horn. The exec reiterated information that we already knew, that J.J. Abrams is directing, that Michael Arndt is writing, and that John Williams will be conducting. So since the studio didn’t take the opportunity to make any announcements on their own stage, fans will have to be patient and wait it out.

In the mean time, some juicy gossip regarding who may be returning for Episode VII has been rumored. If true, it could mean that Emperor Palpatine (played by Ian McDiarmid) could rise up and stir up some trouble within the force.

Now this is just merely a rumor, but according to Latino Review, the Emperor would return as a “Force Ghost” like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Yoda did in Return of the Jedi. Palpatine’s return would differ from the one that is depicted in the Dark Horse comics, where he returns as a clone.

The site adds that Palpatine was training another apprentice before he met his demise in Return of the Jedi.

Rumor or not, it makes a lot of sense to have Palptine return as a ghost and not a clone. I mean if the Jedi can return as ghosts, then why not the Sith? It would be a nice way to bring the Emperor back to the big screen without it being something hokey like being a clone.

So what are your thoughts?

  1. Emperor Palpatine as a ghost. Why not? He can sure get into people’s heads. Darth Sidious is the Hannibal Lecter of the Star Wars galaxy. He does not need to touch anything, he can just coerce people to do his will. Sounds like a great idea.

  4. I personally don’t see how the Emperor could, as all of the ‘force ghosts’ in the movies were Jedis (RotJ was about Anakin, not Luke.) And imo, there was a reason that the ghosts were able to occur with the Jedis that it occurred with.

  5. Terrible idea. I like the Emperor. He’s a wonderfully hammy villain; a great contrast to Vader’s subtle, threatening persona. No, I don’t want to see Ian McDiarmid in another Star Wars movie. There’s no good reason for it. The new villain or villains should have their own motivations and not follow the cues of a vengeful Sith spirit…
