Hackers of Fate is a one-shot comic that takes place in a dystopian alternate universe, beginning in the year 1999. Crime has taken over the city and even the military has left, building a wall around the city to keep the gangs in. An Asian Mega-Corporation, called New Sun, has come in and started to rebuild–including a government and instituting a police state.

This is all told to us by our main character, a nameless data courier, who proceeds to narrate the rest of the story to catch us up to the current which is where the book ends. He meets a girl who appears to have no record in the system, but who has escaped from the New Sun headquarters. Together they form a bond, and a plan to bring down New Sun.

This story reminds me a lot of Johnny Mnemonic. A punk flare to the drawings and a very old view of what technology would be in the future. It feels like it was created in the ’80s. It’s an interesting premise that brings several themes that were very strong in sci-fi at that time.

Though the story is interesting, it seems incredibly rushed. Kept at a high level, so much is glossed over for an ending that isn’t satisfying enough to justify it. It seems like it could have been doubled in length, which would have allowed some breathing room for the plot and character development. Though the art does a wonderful job in getting across so much, it can’t accomplish that much heavy lifting.

Where it ends, the characters could be brought back to start a new series and could even justify the vagueness of this book. Though, it is a fun quick read. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys old school sci-fi for the camp appeal. It’s a nice read to pick up if you have time to kill.
