10 Reasons To Attend The LoneStarCon 3 Science Fiction Convention, Host Of The Hugo Awards
  |  @   |

Today marks the start of LoneStarCon 3, the 71st Annual World Science Fiction Convention, aka Worldcon, which is being held in San Antonio, TX this year. Worldcon is an international gathering of the Science Fiction and Fantasy communities, with exhibits, vendors, games, panels, authors, editors, cosplayers, a masquerade, and more. This con is also host to the annual Hugo Awards, the prestigious award honoring science fiction and fantasy literature and media as well as the genre’s fans. The awards ceremony will be broadcast live and ad-free through Ustream on Sunday, September 1, 2013.

We talked to some of the con’s committee members and asked them to give us 10 reasons why people should be attend LoneStarCon 3, which runs from August 29 – September 2, 2013.

10. To vote for the 2015 Worldcon site.

For 2015, there are three bidders: Helsinki, Finland; Orlando, Florida, and Spokane, Washington. If you want to go where you’d like to go, vote!

9. To vote for the 2014 NASFiC site.

Did you know that next year’s Worldcon is in London on 14 to 18 August 2015? (Visit LonCon3.) Because of that, there is a site selection for the NASFiC (North American SF Convention) to be held in North America next year. Bidders are Detroit, Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona. If you want to go where you’d like to go, vote!

8. San Antonio, TX, has this great River Walk.

San Antonio DOES have a great River Walk, a public space open year-round with lots to see and do. Check out www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com.

7. To encourage costuming in the Worldcon community.

Why go to Worldcon at all?  Why do we care about costuming at Worldcon?  Because, that’s where SF and Fantasy Costuming began. In 1939. At the first Worldcon.  That tradition carries on today. This year’s sure to bring some outstanding cosplay, so be there!

6. To see the great Guests.

There’s a great set of Guests for the convention this year, including  Ellen Datlow, James Gunn, Willie Siros, Norman Spinrad, Paul Cornell (Toastmaster), and Special Guests: Leslie Fish & Joe R. Lansdale. There’s also a Darrell K. Sweet Guest of Honor memorial exhibit. There’s still a few surprises to come, so check out see official site for updates.

5. Because we love you.

But, you knew that!

4. To help with the convention.

Of course.  We do need your help.  Please volunteer (note that there are already entrants, judges, and staff on this list).

3. To see your friends (us!)

Come see us and the other fans who attend Worldcon and be a part of this great science fiction experience.

2. To have a rockin’ good time.  Ye haw!

There will be so much to do at LoneStarCon 3, as well as in and around the city. It’s definitely be a time to remember.

1. To compete in the Masquerade!

The LoneStarCon 3 Masquerade will take place on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott San Antonio Rivercenter and there’s plenty of seating for this popular event. The doors will open at 7:30pm, with the show starting at 8pm.

There are four divisions for the Masquerade – one for every level of costuming:

“¢ Young fen (those under 13 at the beginning of the convention) compete with each

“¢ Novices (those competing for the first time or having not won any ribbons for any costumes on stage) compete against each other

“¢ Journeymen (those competing with one to three world class wins for any costumes on stage) compete against each other; and

“¢ Masters or Craftsmen (those who are in the costuming and/or clothing business, or have three or more world class wins as a journeyman or any world class wins as a master or craftsman) compete against each other.

So there you have it… if you’re looking for a cool con to attend over the next few days, head to San Antonio for LoneStarCon 3.

The Hugo Awards ceremony will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Marriott Rivercenter hotel in downtown San Antonio, starting at 8 p.m. Central Time (9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific) on Sunday, September 1. The evening will be hosted by LoneStarCon 3 Toastmaster Paul Cornell, himself a Hugo Award winner and multiple Hugo Award nominee. Check out this year’s Nominees.
