Is it just me or does it seem like the world has finally embraced comics as a legitimate source of entertainment? It’s nice to see geekdom getting some love from the powers that be. For instance, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued seven truly kick ass coins to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Superman.

The Man of Steel first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938 and has been one of the most popular superheroes ever since. Through the decades the character has changed many times, sometimes slightly and sometimes drastically. But in every incarnation he has been one of the most recognizable icons ever to grace the pages of a comic book. And I have to say, it’s pretty cool that Canada has decided to commemorate this American hero with his own line of coins, many of them limited in quantity.

Produced in a wide range of prices, these coins are available in cupronickel, silver and (for the first time ever) gold. A two image lenticular coin and stamp set is available for the more budget minded collector but die hard fans will definitely want the 14K gold version that not only happens to be the first time Supes has been minted in this prized metal but is also a limited mintage of 2,000 pieces. Five more versions (all in silver) exist in varying prices and styles, including the world’s first achromatic hologram coin (this one had a production run of 10,000). Plenty of these collectibles are affordable on almost any budget, though they do get quite expensive depending on the quantity minted and the metal from which it’s produced.

I urge you to check this out and, if so inclined, quickly order any of the limited edition versions that catch your fancy. They won’t last long, that’s for sure. I imagine these would make great gifts for fans of the last son of Krypton, or pretty much any comic fan, to be honest.

Don’t look at me like that! Everyone knows Wolverine is Canadian, it stands to reason they’ll celebrate him. All they need to do is invent that amazing metal and it’s all downhill from there…right?
