The Hostel series created by Eli Roth continues with Hostel Part III, a slice that while lacking in certain departments and doesn’t have the punch of the first two chapters, has a few turns and gory scenes that will make it worth a glance for horror fans.
The third Hostel movie is set in the United States, specifically Las Vegas, where the Elite Hunting organization has either relocated or established a new “franchise.” Despite the fact that the motives remain the same, allowing the elite to murder, maim, and torture those that "would not be missed", and a new twist adds the Vegas gambling element – allowing members to place bets on expressions of the torture as it happens before a live audience.
Finding themselves mixed up in the turmoil are protagonist Scott (Brian Hallisay) and his buddies, who head to Vegas for his Bachelor Party, which turns into more than what they, and the Elite Hunting members, expect”¦
Put bluntly, as a general film, Hostel Part III is not a very good movie. The performances are undistinguished, the plot is full of holes (pardon the pun), and there are elements of predictability that still stand through some of the unexpected twists.
There’s tackiness galore in certain sequences, particularly the acclimation scenes in the casino, with terrible ‘winner, winner, chicken dinner’ lines and overly gratuitous close-ups of twerking strippers. Plus a few one-liners ripped off from a bunch of other movies for a laugh.
That being said though, the aforementioned twists do add a different element to the mythos of the Hostel series, and the gore scenes are fairly good quality for a horror flick. There are hardly any fright-moments in the movie, making it more of a "torture porn" gag than its predecessors. Despite this, there are some fucked up moments that fit into the series, and the horror fans will dig them.
While that strength is from the horror standpoint, there are a lot of logic gaps and plot holes throughout the story. Additionally, Hostel Part III is riddled with plot elements that are left behind and forgotten about – characters and situations that are never revisited, but are implied to initially have major meaning to the overall story.
Understandably, an element of ambiguity is needed in these kinds of tales, but by the halfway point of the movie, these become highly frustrating and annoying.
If you’re not a horror fan, avoid this one. You’ll hate it and will find it to be a terrible movie. Horror fans, on the other hand, will find some aspects of value, so it may be worth a glance. Don’t expect brilliance, though.
