Listen To The First Sample Of Henry Jackman’s ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Soundtrack

One of the highlights of 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger was the rousing and adventurous orchestral score composed by the great Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Predator). It had plenty of brassy, militaristic swagger but also managed to hit a few emotional sweet spots. Whether listened to on its own or enjoyed with the rest of the movie, Silvestri’s music just flat-out worked.

Thus I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed when it was announced that Silvestri — who also did a bang-up job scoring last year’s Marvel mega-blockbuster The Avengers — would not be returning to provide the musical accompaniment for the Sentinel of Liberty’s super sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Instead, the task was handed over to Henry Jackman, who has proven his worth in recent years with terrific scores for Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It Ralph, and most recently This is the End.

Now, Marvel Studios posted a brief snippet of Jackman’s score for Winter Soldier — you can listen to the music sample here below.

Given the sequel’s darker content and its setting in modern-day America, it’s not at all a revelation that Jackson’s score takes on a more brooding tone than Silvestri’s jauntily patriotic themes. Footage from Winter Soldier screened to enthusiastic audience responses in July at the San Diego Comic-Con and last month at Disney’s D23 Expo. Marvel has built up a pretty solid track record when it comes to making entertaining superhero movies that bank them hundreds of millions in worldwide ticket sales. I loved The First Avenger and from the sounds of things, Winter Soldier is looking to surpass the original in more than a few ways.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4, 2014.
