Fox Acquires Rights To Batman Prequel Series ‘Gotham’ Focusing On Commissioner Gordon

Another superhero-related TV series is on the way, this time from the DC Comics universe. The pilot for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered tonight, and now, after a bidding war took place, Fox has made a large deal with Warner Brothers TV to acquire the rights to Gotham, a drama series that will focus on Batman character Commissioner Gordon.

The series is a prequel to the Batman story, set years before Gordon ever meets Batman. In fact, the Dark Knight won’t be a part of the show at all (at least not at first—you never know with TV). It follows the origins or Gordon back when he was a detective, and the villains who made Gotham City famous.

Gotham comes from Bruno Heller, creator of the amazing but far too short-lived HBO series Rome and the hit CBS series The Mentalist, and the deal comes with a series commitment.

Other DC Comics-based TV series include Smallville, Arrow, and the upcoming Flash.

Will you watch a TV series focusing on a young Commissioner Gordon?

  1. I’ll only watch this if it airs on a channel available on Freeview or Freesat, like Agents of SHIELD.

  2. Why do these kind of good ideas have to go back to ‘prequel status’… Gotham would have worked better as a “what happens in the city after Batman leaves to face Superman and (hopefully) join the Justice League”… there is a hole there in an already structured (and ongoing) narrative, so why not fill it with an on-going story line peoples ??!?

SHIELD Pics up the threads of an ongoing-story, I honestly with Fox, Warners and Sony would stop re-Booting and prequel-ising (it’s probably a real word) their source material and just get on with telling an on-going story in thier respective XMen, Batman, DC and Spiderman universes
