The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Carton of Hate” Henchman21, and “Have you been reading Milk and Cheese again?” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 2, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Here’s the thing, I was going to follow last week’s format and do a bunch of quick shots about a bunch of issues out this week. But then I started writing and I got excited about the comics out this week because comics are freaking awesome! And there’s a lot of freaking awesome comics out this week and I couldn’t stop writing about them. So as you can see, we’ve got a lot to get through this week and not much time to do it so let’s not delay anymore, let’s dance with The GoD List in the pale moonlight.

CBLDF Liberty Annual 2013

CBLDF Liberty Annual 2013 (Image Comics/CBLDF – $4.99) I shouldn’t need to name the creators working on this book, I should just tell you that this issue supports the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a great organization that helps comic creators and retailers who have run-ins with the law over First Amendment rights and censorship issues. They’ve done a lot of great work over the years and continue to do great work all the time, and they could use your support. Fortunately, karma isn’t the only reason to buy this issue, as you get work from some of the best artists working today. There is a new Hack/Slash story from Tim Seeley, new work from Richard Corben, a story by my two favorite artists Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, and tons more. 48 pages, great art, great cause, this is the one book you should buy this week.

All-New X-Men #17 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) I have largely enjoying Battle of the Atom, despite a few weird plot issues, until part five in last week’s issue of Wolverine and the X-Men, where they introduced the character find of 2013: Mustache Colossus! Mustache Colossus, he’s just like regular Colossus, except he’s got a mustache! Will the X-Men from the past ever get sent to their own time? What are the X-Men from the future really up to? Who is the mysterious Ice-Monster? Who cares, because Mustache Colossus!

Lazarus #4 (Image Comics – $2.99) So far, Greg Rucka’s story of a future ruled by warring families and their immortal warriors has been fascinating so far. Rucka has built a believable world and in a short three issues has introduced us to many interesting characters and has fleshed out the world to an amazing degree, given the space he’s had to work with. This is smart science fiction with a lot of action and a leading lady that I just want to learn more about. And artist Michael Lark has been turning in some amazing work. I find myself slowing down to examine every panel and the way he sets up the pacing of a page is second to none. It’s still early enough to get in on the ground floor of one of the best series out there.

Swamp Thing #24 (DC Comic – $2.99) Hooray, Villains Month is over! Back to the regular stories! That is all! Exclamation points!!!

Hinterkind #1 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $2.99) Sometimes it’s easiest just to repeat what the comic companies have already said about a new series, so here is what DC/Vertigo has to say about Hinterkind #1

Decades after “The Blight” all but wiped out the human race, Mother Nature is taking back what’s hers, and she’s not alone”¦The Hinterkind have returned.

From the last, lost corners of the world they come, a myriad menagerie of myth and magic…but these aren’t childhood fairytale creatures. They are flesh, blood and passion, and they have a long-simmering hatred for those who drove them into the shadows: The human race!

After her grandfather disappears, Prosper Monday must leave the security and seclusion of their Central Park village to venture into the wilds to find him, unaware of how much the world has changed. Or how hungry it has become”¦

Sounds interesting to me. This could very well be the start of another great Vertigo series. We’ll see how it goes.

Witching Hour #1 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $7.99) Another anthology issue, this time tying into the Halloween season with nine stories told over 70 pages with work by Cliff Chiang, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Matthew Sturges, Mark Buckingham, and many more. Take a look into this one and see if it’s for you.

Trillium #3 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $2.99) The first issue had a unique format with two stories that started at either end of the comic and met in the middle. The second issue continued the story of a man and a woman from two different time periods meeting in an ancient temple. The way writer/artist Jeff Lemire told the story of two characters who speak a different language was brilliant, switching back and forth between the characters with each character learning slightly more each page. I can’t wait to see what Lemire does with this issue.

MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet Trade paperback (Image Comics – $14.99) Did you miss out on the best series of 2013? Well now’s your chance to read it if you haven’t. No, I’m not talking about a new collection of Saga, I’m talking about freaking MacGyver! This series was just a fun action comic that perfectly captured the spirit of the original series. It helps that it was co-written by MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff along with Tony Lee as the main writer. The art by Will Sliney also adds to the package, with well told action scenes and a lot of expressive characters. It’s just a solid comic and even if you don’t have a connection to MacGyver, it’s still worth picking up.
