Interview: ‘Zoe: Out Of Time’ Creators J. Michalski and Alexander Lagos
  |

J. Michalski and Alexander Lagos’ Zoe: Out Of Time is a time travel series — of which I reviewed the first two issues — that begins in 2050 and sees its protagonist transported to 1990.

With a solid beginning and a whole lot of nostalgia, Zoe: Out Of Time is tailored to many: science fiction fans, time travel enthusiasts, romantics, and those who remember the ’90s all too well.

I recently had the pleasure to speak with Michalski and Lagos via email and then through a short interview. The two comic book creators were nothing short of professional and friendly. I had a wonderful experience getting to know them amidst our brief chats and they have some interesting things to say about their series as a whole.

Check out our conversation and a preview of issue #3 of Zoe: Out Of Time below.

Geeks of Doom: With two issues of Zoe: Out Of Time released, what can you tell the Geeks of Doom community about what’s in store for our heroine, trapped in the 1990s?

Michalski/Lagos: Things really get crazy with issue three — lots of action! We won’t spoil it here, but Zoe learns some startling news about Ventura and his thugs, and this information puts her into some real danger. Things get very exciting and very wild. Hopefully, readers will enjoy the surprises in these next two issues.

GoD: Okay, I have to ask: of all of the time periods to choose from — and believe me, I was in no way disappointed by the choice — why the ’90s?

M/L: The early ’90s was a very exciting and fun time in music history. It was one of the last moments in music history where there was a real movement — a renaissance, so to speak — of musical ideas and attitude. For me (Lagos), personally, I relate to that period very much as I was in a band myself and was in the scene. So, writing about it felt natural for me. Also, keeping it in the not-so-distant past makes the era very relatable for our younger readers — people like Kurt Cobain and the bands of that era are still very fresh on people’s minds today. So, it doesn’t, or hopefully, shouldn’t feel alien to readers.

GoD: Time travel is a fun and intriguing sub-genre of science fiction; but it can also be a difficult topic to pull off based on the various theories behind what may or may not occur when traveling through time. Zoe: Out Of Time seems to avoid a lot of those difficult notions while keeping the story in a natural and enthralling progression. What steps do you have to take to ensure that the “rules” of time travel won’t necessarily affect Zoe’s adventure?

M/L: The “time travel” is only a minor part of the story. At the core, it is a love story. The right people meet each other but they belong to two different worlds. Obviously with time travel stories, you sort of have to check your criticism at the door, or you won’t enjoy it. Our approach was to keep the time travel concept as simple as possible so that the real story lives and breathes and becomes the focus for the reader. But, yes, there are time travel story holes we tried to avoid and you’ll just have to see what happens to find out if we pulled it off! =)

GoD: As independent creators, what does your process for crafting this comic look like?

M/L: Haha! Well…we wear all the hats! Creator, writer, editor, publisher, financier, distributor, market research and execution, etc…Thank God, we don’t have to draw or color the damn thing! As far as the writing process goes, we sit down, discuss each scene, and take turns typing drafts. Ultimately, we try to have fun with it.

GoD: Do you have any plans to continue Zoe: Out Of Time once the four issue series is complete?

M/L: Not at this time. This is a four issue series for a reason. After everything we’ve put Zoe through, we think she needs some time to chill out. Maybe get her dad to loosen up a bit, teach him slam dance, etc. Haha!

GoD: Does your creative team have any other projects in the works?

M/L: Well, let’s see… J. has some projects in the pipeline with an announcement coming in the early part of 2014. Alexander and his brother, Joseph, have their third book in their Sons Of Liberty graphic series coming out. And, Alexander also has two other projects with an announcement coming out in early 2014. More of artist Derlis Santacruz’s amazing work can be seen in Justice League Of America #7.2: Killer Frost as well as in Batman: The Dark Knight #23.1: The Ventriloquist. So, great things are coming!

GoD: How can the Geeks of Doom community support you?

M/L: Sometimes the best kind of support in this industry is simply word of mouth. If you like our comic, Zoe: Out Of Time, we ask that you get on Facebook and Twitter and tell everyone you know about it. There are a lot of people out there just waiting to take their first steps into the comics/graphic novels world, but are hesitant because they just don’t want to read another typical superhero comic or long running series. Zoe is neither of those, but a fun, cinematic-like adventure for all ages that asks a simple question: what would you do if someone gave you a time travel device? For Zoe, it’s to meet her idol. We hope you enjoy it; we hope you share it; and we hope to hear your thoughts!

You can follow Zoe: Out Of Time on Facebook and Twitter. You can also pick up the first issue at ComiXology for only $0.99!
