The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Ready for NYCC?” Henchman21, and “Hell yeah!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 9, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Yup, it’s another week before a big convention which means tons of great books dropping this week, especially when it comes to collections, with new volumes of Thor, the first collection of Greg Rucka’s Lazarus, new work from Paul Pope with Battling Boy, and the Thanos Rising collection, just to name a few. However, the winner of this week’s single issues is Image Comics, which is why so many of the books on this week’s list come from them, and I didn’t even write about all the ones I could have, with Rocket Girl #1 featuring art by Amy Reeder being another can’t-miss. And that’s not even mentioning all the other amazing books out. So, don’t skip your trip to your friendly neighborhood comic store this week, and if you still need books to buy, look no further than The GoD List!

Three #1

Three #1 (Image Comics – $2.99) As a fan of historical fiction, I was intrigued by the premise of three Spartan slaves and their escape from a group of warriors sent to track them down. It’s hard to talk about Kieron Gillen and Ryan Kelly’s new series without bringing up the specter of Frank Miller’s 300, but where Miller looked to idolize the Spartan society, Gillen looks to cast them in a different light. These are not quite the heroic warriors most will recognize. No, this is a brutal society hip deep in slavery and mistreatment of its fellow man. And as excited as I am to read this story, I’m more excited to see new work from Ryan Kelly. His last series, Saucer Country, did not last near long enough for my taste, and I have loved everything he has done since I first encountered his work on Local. Kelly excels at drawing real people, which makes this the perfect series for him to work on. This is one I’ve been looking forward to. I can’t wait to read it.

Private Eye #4 (Panel Syndicate – $Whatever You Want) – The fourth issue of this digital only series by Brian K Vaughan and Marcos Martin dropped on Tuesday, and the price is, as listed above, whatever you want to pay. For my money, this is Vaughan’s best series right now. He has created a fantastic future world where privacy is king and the press are the cops. There is a grand mystery going on and each issue expands on that mystery while showing us more of the world. And then you’ve got the marvelous artwork of Martin, with its bright colors and clean lines. If you’re averse to digital comics, this is the one that will convince you that it’s not just a fad.

Walking Dead #115 (Image Comics – $2.99) ‘All-Out War’ begins. I don’t exactly know what that means because I’m reading in trades. The last I knew Rick and crew had been defeated and subjugated by some bad folks. Sounds like that is about to change. I mean, just look at the name of the story line. It’s a big time for The Walking Dead, now celebrating its tenth anniversary and with a new season of its hit TV series starting soon. It’s easy to forget about The Walking Dead at this point, since it is a total juggernaut that keeps chugging along. It’s good to see Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard changing things up.

Manhattan Projects #15 (Image Comics – $3.50) Simply fantastic. I don’t have many other words to describe Jonathan Hickman’s story about the greatest minds of the 20th Century gone mad. This issue takes us back into the mind of Joseph Oppenheimer and his multiple personalities. This is another series that just floors me with every issue.
