News of a Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, broke before it was determined what could happen to Bob Odenkirk‘s character Saul Goodman. For the sake of spoilers I will leave out what happens to ABQ’s favorite lawyer, but just know that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and showrunner Peter Gould will be back to work on the prequel spinoff.
The two have confirmed that the show’s setting will stay in New Mexico to maintain its Breaking Bad presence. Gilligan also confirmed that the show will geared more towards comedy, but that there will also be dramatic elements. According to them it would be about 75% comedy and 25% drama. Now in a new interview, Gilligan talks about what we would see in Better Call Saul, and if Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, or other stars of the show might show up in the spinoff.
While the show will be a comedy, in order to keep the series sustainable, there will also be a dramatic angle to keep audiences glued to the show. To help making that happen Gilligan is bringing back the Breaking Bad writing crew to help him work on “that ongoing itch that Saul needs to scratch,” to help with the show’s sustainability:
“We’re both one-hour drama guys. So we figured, “˜Why not shoot Saul in the same way?’ Let’s shoot it in Albuquerque, let’s get as much of the crew back together as possible, and let’s do it the way we did it before so that it will be of a piece with that pre-existing fictional universe that we had so much fun creating.”
Since the spinoff was announced, multiple actors have expressed interest in reprising their roles. Gilligan is definitely open to the idea of seeing Walter White and Jesse Pinkman again:
“Personally, I’d have a hard time resisting putting all these guys in for a cameo or two every now and then.”
As to when we could be seeing the series premiere, AMC is tentatively planning to air sometime between August and October.
