Marvel Knights/Shout Factory
Release Date: September 10, 2013

The fine folks at Shout Factory, along with Marvel Knights, have come together to bring the 6-issue comic book miniseries of Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk to life and onto your TV screen with the Marvel Knights: Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk motion comic.

When the comic book series initially came out, I picked up the first couple of issues, mostly because I wanted to see what Damon Lindelof (Lost) would bring to the table. But as with many comic book titles, a series of delays turned this into a four-year run. But now I can see what I missed, and see it come to life without having to track down the rest of the print run.

The process they use to animate this tale takes the original artwork and gives it little movements and tweaks. Mouths move when there is talking and some body movements, and for the most part looks great. The only part that looks a little goofy is a ping pong match between Iron Man and Captain America.

Let’s get the technical stuff out of the way:

Special Features: a 7:26 BTS with interviews with artist Leinil Francis Yu and the supervising producer, Kalia Cheng, talking about the history of the series and how it came to be chosen to be made into a movie.

Play All or Individual Episodes: 6 episodes make up the film, about 10 minutes each. The Play All is nice, but there’s opening and end credits in between each episode.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel at 48 kHz and 448 kbps (Audio)
Mpeg-2 at around 4-8 Mbps (Video)

The Story:

Without revealing any spoilers, Wolverine is hired by Nick Fury to hunt down and kill Hulk, who was responsible for the deaths of 800 people. He was sentenced to death, but survived, and his dealing with his love for Betty Ross, who broke his heart and sent him into a downward spiral.

And since we have Damon Lindelof involved, there are flashbacks a plenty, and the story is told out of order, which would make Quentin Tarantino proud. And the way the story begins as we are post-battle and Hulk has ripped Wolverine into two, which really brings the wow factor into this one and makes you more interested to see how we got there. Just be patient, as it takes a bit to get there. We have back stories to get to and showing how the parties involved all come together.

I would say for the most part I enjoyed this, although I am wondering how this would have looked given the treatment that DC Comics does with their DVD release. But at least this way, they don’t change the style of the art, and not have to tone it down, because Yu’s artwork is pretty amazing.
