Director Mick Garris Psycho IV: The Beginning Trailers From Hell

I don’t know about you, but Psycho IV: The Beginning was never on my radar. The 1990 direct-to-cable TV movie served as a prequel and sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film Psycho (1960) and saw star Anthony Perkins return as Norman Bates.

Perkins, who starred in and directed the previous film, Psycho III, was skipped over as director for Psycho IV and Universal brought on Mick Garris (Critters 2) instead.

Garris recently did a short commentary on Psycho IV for Trailers From Hell, where he talked about directing veteran actor Anthony Perkins and E.T. star Henry Thomas on the sequel and stepping into the shoes of the master Alfred Hitchcock.

Check out the 3-minute commentary video here below.

At the time of Psycho IV, the Garris’ biggest project to date had been 1988’s Critters 2: The Main Course. Since then, he’s gone on to direct several Stephen King adaptations (The Stand, 1997’s The Shining, Sleepwalkers, Bag of Bones) and created the television horror anthology series Masters of Horror. He also wrote films like Hocus Pocus, The Fly II, and Batteries Not Included.

Psycho IV: The Beginning is available as part of the Psycho – Triple Feature DVD, which also includes Psycho II and Psycho III. If you’d like the original Psycho, which is one of the best horror/suspense films ever made, check it out on DVD or as part of the Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection Blu-ray box set, which contains 15 classic Hitchcock films.

PSYCHO IV THE BEGINNING In this chilling prequel to the classic Hitchcock thriller, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) is drawn to a late night radio show, where the host (C.C.H. Pounder) encourages him to share his views on the topic of matricide – the murder of a mother by her own child. Reliving his childhood, Norman recounts his trails as a young boy (Henry Thomas) living with his widowed schizophrenic mother (Olivia Hussey). These haunting memories are more than just images of the past; they threaten to rekindle his killing urge in this spine-chilling thriller.
