The GoD List: Comics For October 30, 2013
  |  @   |

Each and every week, I, “Count Chocula” Henchman21, and “Boo Berry” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 30, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It’s Halloween, kiddies which means it’s time for us to bring you a list full of creepy tales to keep you entertained on a dark and stormy night. Or maybe you’re not into the whole horror thing and you just want to keep up with your favorite superheroes. Fortunately, we’ve got something for everyone today. So go out and pick up some comics, and if you’re got a little extra money and plan on handing out candy to the neighborhood kids, consider buying some cheap kid friendly issues out of the quarter bins and hand those out along with the candy. It’s better than handing out floss or pennies or anything that isn’t candy. If there’s one thing we don’t recommend, it’s getting your house egged because you let down all those trick or treaters. So, go out, have fun, stay safe, and enjoy comics with this extra scary edition of The GoD List!

Revival, Volume 1 Deluxe Edition Hardcover (Image Comics – $34.99) As far as I’m concerned there’s only one horror book that you should pick up for Halloween, and it’s Image Comics Revival. And even calling this series a horror does it a bit of a disservice, since it describes itself as a “Rural Noir” which is an accurate description. Revival is many different things; part family drama, part mystery, part horror. In Revival, a small town in rural Wisconsin is the scene of a strange event where the dead come back to life for one day. Many families are affected, including the family of police office Dana Cypress, who not only has to deal with her sister being one of those revived, but also has to solve a murder that shouldn’t be possible. And that’s just the start of the series. Tim Seeley and Mike Norton have crafted a unique comic series that mixes many different genres into something unique. Norton’s art captures both the quiet family moments as well as the terrible and bizarre things that happen to the characters. This deluxe hardcover collects issues 1-11 of the series, as well as the Free Comic Book Day 2012 short story and a host of special features.

Infinity #5 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Did you read Infinity #4? That issued settled once and for all that Thor is the ultimate bad ass in the Marvel Universe. I don’t know if I could be enjoying Infinity more, between Jonathan Hickman’s expansive story and Jerome Opena’s gorgeous art, it has delivered on every level so far. Now it’s time to see if Hickman can deliver a good ending. I think he will.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) It’s been a fun ride as the X-Men of the past fought the X-Men of the present and then the X-Men of the future showed up and then MUSTACHE COLOSSUS!! I’ve enjoyed Battle of the Atom for the most part, mostly because who doesn’t like it when weird future versions of characters show up. The fact that we got to see four different versions of Iceman and MUSTACHE FREAKIN’ COLOSSUS makes this crossover worth it regardless of how the series wraps up. We know that we’re getting another series coming out of it (Amazing X-Men by Jason Aaron) and given writer Brian Bendis past record ending Marvel event’s I’m more than a little worried as to what if anything will happen, or if I’ll just be left scratching my head. I will give credit to Marvel though and say that even though there were 10 parts to the crossover, it only took two months, and that kept the energy up the whole way. If Marvel wants to do this once a year, I’d be okay with that, as long as they can keep coming up with new ideas (which, let’s be honest, they probably can’t).

Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular (KaBoom! – $4.99) If you’re looking for something that’s still Halloween themed, but maybe a bit more kid friendly, look no further than this special issue of Adventure Time! This anthology features a collection of stories set in the land of Ooo, each focusing on a different creepy denizen of the world of Adventure Time. There’s sure to be vampires and liches and whatever else the creators want to throw in. But underneath the scary exterior, there’s sure to be all the lighthearted fun than makes Adventure Time so great. This is going to be good for young and old looking for a scare and a laugh.

Ash and the Army of Darkness #1 (Dynamite Entertainment – $3.99) There are several reasons to pick up this issue. First, it’s written by Steve Niles, one of the masters of comic book horror and the mind behind 30 Days of Night. Second, it features art by Dennis Calero, whose dark, atmospheric art is a perfect match for the series. Third, it’s Halloween and it’s a new Army of Darkness seies. Niles is going to be spending the next year giving readers his take on Ash and his never ending battle with the deadites. Niles story starts where Army of Darkness ended, with Ash in his regular job in the modern day, but quickly sends him back to the 1300’s where Arthur, Wiseman, and Henry the Red are still dealing with the titular army. Fans of the film will eat this up.

The Sandman: Overture #1 (Vertigo Comics – $4.99) The long-awaited return of The Sandman has finally arrived! As I write this, I’m staring longingly at my advanced review copy of The Sandman: Overture #1, written by The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman with art by J. H. Williams III. I don’t dare open it because I want to express my anticipation earnestly; it’s not easy though, as all I want to go is open it and feel the warm embrace of The Sandman universe once again. Gaiman happens to be my favorite writer ever and The Sandman one of my favorite comic book series of all time. It’s been 10 years since the last big release, 2003’s The Sandman: Endless Nights, but Overture is a prequel story that tells of the events leading up to the capture of Morpheus (aka Dream aka Sandman) in the very first issue of The Sandman, which was released in 1989.Overture also promises to give us plenty of cameos by popular characters from The Sandman universe. This issue, and this series, is a must-have. Note – if you want a digital copy, you can get this issue for Kindle; also, there will be a Sandman: Overture #1 – Special Edition coming out on November 27, 2013.

I actually did enjoy most of this story; it was exciting to get a view into the ornate rooms, the ridiculous guests…and finally, what becomes of them. – Pfeff-Bot [Review]
