Disney Theatrical Productions and William Goldman To Bring ‘The Princess Bride’ To The Stage

Disney Theatrical Productions is teaming up with William Goldman to bring beloved fairy tale The Princess Bride to the stage.

Disney will work with Goldman to adapt The Princess Bride—from both his 1973 original book and his screenplay for the 1987 classic movie of the same name—and it’s not yet clear whether the final product will be a musical or a play.

The deal was put together by Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, who was involved with the movie adaptation while he was at Castle Rock Entertainment.

Of the announcement, Horn said:

“My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart. For all those years and a few more, I’ve been friends with the brilliant Bill Goldman, and to now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true. It couldn’t be in better hands than those of the experienced Disney Theatrical team led by Tom Schumacher.”

No creative team has been put together yet to take on the production, and no timetable is in place for its completion.

Disney Theatrical Productions’ juggernaut, The Lion King, recently passed $1 billion box office mark on Broadway, and their next musical, Aladdin, is set for Broadway beginning early next year.
