Doctor Who Google Doodle

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, Google has created an interactive Google Doodle based on the series — a Whodle! — and launched it today on their home pages around the world.

The doodle serves as an interactive game where you play as each of the eleven doctors in a race against time against a Dalek.

As the Doctor, you need to collect all the letters of “Google” and bring them back to the TARDIS, while the Dalek is after you. But don’t worry, if you die, you’ll just regenerate to the next incarnation of the Doctor, though before that you’ll have a Dalek on you shouting its signature phrase, “Exterminate!” Later levels reveal some more Whovian goodness (or badness, if you will).

The interactive game includes authentic sound effects from Doctor Who, provided to the Google Doodle creators by the BBC. It’s not yet live on all Google home pages, but as of this posting, it’s live on Google UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many more places – but not yet in the United States.

This “Whodle” is one of the biggest that Google has ever produced, according to The Guardian, which spoke to Matthew Cruickshank, one of the five designers who created the Doctor Who Google Doodle.

Earlier this year, a petition was created at Change.org for Google to do a Doodle for Doctor Who‘s 50th Anniversary. Google hasn’t fessed up as to whether the petition prompted or swayed their decision to honor the long-running television series.

But this interactive Doodle isn’t Google’s first foray into the Who universe: Back in August, they add the TARDIS to Streetview Maps.

As part of the 50th anniversary, The Day of the Doctor, which stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman and will see guest appearances by David Tennant, Billie Piper, John Hurt, and many more, airs on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:50pm GMT on BBC One in the UK and at 2:50pm EST on BBC America in the U.S. An Adventure In Space And Time will air on BBC America on Friday, November 22 at 9PM ET/PT, with Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited – The Eleventh Doctor, a special featuring current doctor Matt Smith, airing on November 24, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on BBC America, which will be doing a marathon that day of Smith’s top 11 episodes as voted by the fans.
