The BBC has released the official title of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, along with artwork and more details about the upcoming episode.

The 2013 Christmas Special will be called The Time of the Doctor and will be current Doctor Matt Smith‘s final story.

Check out the artwork here below, along with the official synopsis for the Doctor Who: The Time of the Doctor.

Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.

UPDATE: Our own cGt2099 noticed that if you look closely at the flames on either side of Matt Smith, you’ll see the faces of incoming Doctor Peter Capaldi and former Doctor Paul McGann, who we got to see return recently in the Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor prequel minisode The Night of the Doctor.
