Disney’s ‘Descendants’: A New Live-Action TV Movie Featuring Offspring Of Classic Disney Characters

It’s official: Disney has announced the development of an original television movie called Descendants based on the teenage children of several fan-favorite villains. And with the ever-popular fairytale genre in both TV and film (Once Upon A Time, Grimm, Snow White and the Huntsman, the forthcoming Maleficent, among a multitude of others), why not?

The movie will be directed by Kenny Ortega, who’s worked with Disney in the past on projects like Hocus Pocus and the High School Musical movies, and written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (Runaway Bride, Desperate Housewives), with a 2015 Disney Channel premiere planned.

Read Disney’s official blurb below.

In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?

Taking some beloved fantasy folklore and adding in a dash of good old fashioned teenage drama sounds like a recipe for success!

It is not known if any of the elder villains will appear (although one might assume so, if not briefly). Beyond that is the question of casting and cameos: will we see any of the actors from Once Upon A Time, perhaps? Who will play the main characters? Will we see any familiar faces?

This announcement brings up many questions but also much excitement in the Disney and fairytale-loving community.

And in Disney-like fashion, don’t forget to look for the Easter egg in the promotional banner: a half “Hidden Mickey” in the apple.

  1. It’s almost the exact same plot as Ever After High, which just came out.
