Sony Announces PlayStation Now; Streaming Video Game Service Will Not Require Game Console

Sony's PlayStation Now

Sony has made a massive announcement. We’ve expected some sort of video game streaming option to allow fans to play older games (instead of making their latest console, the PlayStation 4, backwards compatible) for some time now after the announcement that they had acquire streaming service Gaikai. Now the company has made things official, announcing PlayStation Now.

Details will surely be coming as time goes on, but for right now, here’s what we do know: they’re aiming very high. Basically, PS Now will offer gamers the ability to play previous generation PlayStation titles—PlayStation, PS2, and PS3—on not just their consoles, but on various platforms. In fact, you’ll eventually even have the option of using the service to play full PlayStation titles on non-Sony devices, such as your smartphone or tablet. Yikes.

Continue reading for more info, including a chunk of the press release Sony sent out, and top see a video of the announcement.

The plan is for PlayStation Now to begin its beta program by the end of this month, and for the service to officially arrive sometime this summer. It first will be available on Sony platforms like the consoles and PS Vita as well as most 2014 Sony BRAVIA TVs, and then eventually spread out to non-Sony internet-connected devices, including tablets and smartphones. This means, if all works as described, you should be able to play Game of the Year favorite The Last of Us at home on your PS4, and then pick up wherever you left off on your smartphone later. Sorcery, I tell you!

There will also be options: Sony says that you can pay for a subscription to the service if you will play a lot, or, if you prefer, you can rent specific games instead.

Additionally, the games offered will include PlayStation Network features such as multiplayer, trophies, and messaging as well.

Here’s part of Sony’s press release:

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 U.S. models of Sony’s BRAVIA® TV*2 lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other Internet-connected devices.

SCE’s vision for PS Now is to enable users to instantly enjoy a wide range of full games on the Internet-connected consumer electronics devices they use every day. The accessibility of PS Now means, for example, that PS4 users in the living room can continue playing a game on a PS3 system in their bedroom. Or PS Vita users can enjoy instant access to a game wherever there’s Wi-Fi connectivity, such as outdoors, then can switch to a supporting BRAVIA® TV’s big screen and play the same game after arriving home.

PS Now will offer choice to gamers with how they want to access content. Gamers can rent by title for specific games they are interested in, or they can choose a subscription that delivers additional value with the ability to explore and play many games available across a wide variety of genres. In addition, the service will support many popular PSNSM features such as online multi-player, Trophies, and messages.

“We are thrilled to deliver entertainment experiences only possible from PlayStation through our new streaming game service,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “PS Now will allow users to engage in the world of PlayStation, whether they’re existing fans or have never owned a PlayStation platform.”

During the 2014 International CES held in Las Vegas from January 7, attendees can visit the Sony booth to have a hands-on experience with the PS Now service for the first time ever. Attendees can enjoy four blockbuster PS3 titles, BEYOND: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, The Last of Us and Puppeteer from SCE Worldwide Studios, on PS Vita or BRAVIA® TV.

Prior to the official launch, SCE will begin a beta program on PS3 systems in certain regions of the United States from the end of January. Additional information about PS Now will be available at http://us.playstation.com/playstationnow.

And if all of this wasn’t enough, Sony even plans to offer streaming live television, as well as DVR functions that you’ll also be able to use on multiple platforms.

PlayStation Now is truly an ambitious project for Sony. And if it works, it could—for lack of a better term–be a real game changer. The question is…will it work?

  1. F&@K as a xbox fanboy might just have to pick up a PS 4 , that’s pretty sweet.
    Damnit…

  2. It’s OK, I’m not sure it’s going to make me run out and pick up a PS4 over having Titanfall. Also, I’d prefer to have the seamless media option vs trying to play KZ on my phone or tablet. I don’t even like trying to play State of Decay on my laptop vs console, but I DO know that I like to be able to easily drop video files into my videos folder on my computer and then watch them on my 360.

Also, I don’t think either company has ever put out a service, no matter what it does, without fucking it up so we’ll see if streaming between 2GB and 8GB games actually works. Also, I’m not sure if there’s a phone network out there right now that could handle streaming games. Neither console puts enough space on HDD for their respective downloadable marketplaces anyways, so if Sony does this right and has controls that work and scales the games to work well on phones and tablets, who knows?

  3. So those of us who already paid for these games when they came out in their original form will get to pay to play them again (having not finished the majority of them the first time around)…

  4. OnLive people. Already does most of this, except the TV streaming because that is what Netflix and Hulu are for.

  5. Yea…i really want titanfall

  6. Respawn Entertainment is just the rejects fired from Infinity Ward because they couldn’t hack it. We will see how good or bad Titanfall is.

  7. Yeah we already have that game. It’s called Blacklight Retribution. And more people are playing Warframe. Just shows you how popular Mech shooters are. Hawken is probably better then this is going to be plus its F2p.

    Comment by Brian Lee — January 9, 2014 @ 12:40 pm

  8. If you want a Mech shooter right now, Blacklight retribution is free on ps4 plus warframe is good. Don’t forget about infamous.

  9. Brian don’t lie to yourself, reinvented fps and due to activision they got fired for meeting with EA. It’s like saying destiny is crap cause they are halo rejects….don’t be.stupid fangirl

  10. Yes Brian warframe is just like titanfall…I’m just going to walk away from this sad blatant fanboy comment slowly…slowly.

  11. I’m not a fanboy and if you’re a fanboy just trying to pimp PS4 games then I’m not going to have a conversation. However, if you’re open to a reasonable discussion then I’m happy to chat. All of the games you mentioned are nothing like Titanfall claims to be. WF and BR might as well be called Battlefield with worse graphics. They’re both very 2D oriented gameplay and while it is cool that you can call in a mech, it really only serves the purpose of augmenting the 2D gameplay with a vehicle, AKA Battlefield’s tanks and whatnot.

Hawken is a pure mech game and, once again, is very 2D oriented. Though the graphics are fine, the gameplay really doesn’t differ that much from the old Mech-whatever assault games.

The reason that people are excited for Titanfall is because it has the chance to revolutionize how you move in a FPS. That is, instead of following the linear path to get around the level, eg up stairs or jumping up a set of blocks, you can use parkour to get up structures. Really like a true open world FPS of Mirror’s Edge. The reason people are excited about TF isn’t because there’s going to be mechs, they’re excited about the concept of true freedom of movement around the levels. Also, the development team wasn’t fired from the CoD studios, they left because they were unhappy about the lack of innovation within the CoD games, which I can completely agree with.

The lack of innovation is why I’ve quit playing CoD and didn’t even buy the new one. Also, it’s why I don’t consider Killzone worthwhile to push me towards a PS4. KZ has a cool story, but really the gameplay is just like CoD or BF. The thing that pushed me towards a 360 was State of Decay, which in my mind was one of the coolest concept games of its time. You should check it out on Steam if you’re into zombie survival. It’s like a more polished third person Day Z.

  12. Titanfall isn’t revolutionizing anything. They are just trying to revamp it. But the classic mech assaults were the best. And didn’t get KZ either. People always assume u bought a ps4 for KZ. I admit I thought about it but couldn’t do it. I got all multiplats. Which if I’m buying more multiplats in my life, I want the better system to run them . Just look at AC4. GOTY for both systems and the ps4 version is better not only because graphics but also exclusive content. I am playing that game more then any other. Who knew pirating could be so much fun. But I can’t wait for infamous, watchdog and destiny. And again watchdogs and destiny have exclusive content thats not on xbone. All devs had said ps4 is easier to code for as well. So the xbone version will never be more polished then ps4. They might make it just as polished but never exceed ps4. So either you get the same game or less of a version for xbone. I believe more games for ps4 will get exclusive content because ps4 is easier to code for. Due inpart cause while they are finished coding for ps4 they are still working on xbone and since ps4 is easier to code for they can add an hour or two of exclusive content while finishing the xbone version.I am also getting tired of pure shooters. I got bf4 and Cod and hardly play them. Mechs aren’t going to make me say dang I need that. If its that good I can wait for the sequel.

  13. I NEVER SAID WARFRAME WAS LIKE TITANFALL YOU DOLT! I said more people are playing warframe and that goes to show you that the majority doesn’t care for mech shooters. I know you aren’t that bright because of the brainwashing MS gave you but try to comprehend a comment you are replying too.

  14. OH AN XBOT TROLL CALLED ME A FANGIRL! OMG, HOW CAN I EVER GO ON IN LIFE! They didn’t reinvent fps. They just went to the modern era which no one had done before. Now everyone is doing modern warfare. If you said halo reinvented it then I would agree. Everyone uses the halo (Bungie) formula. But no you can’t compare the two because it was only two employees that were fired from Activision and infinity ward was split up. One of the guys wasn’t even involved in the production side of Infinity ward. So in all actuality its only one game developer. The whole Bungie crew left halo. All still intact, same crew. Respawn ent is no Infinity Ward. Lets compare call Infinity Ward the Baltimore Ravens and Bungie the 49ers. The ravens like infinity ward lost key players now no playoffs. Ed Reed like Jason West on a different team and a key reason they won, where are those jets? The whole 49ers crew back again, just like Bungie, back in playoffs.

  15. Bro i know you love Sony but thing is i enjoy Microsoft i have nothing against Sony just Sony ponies who feel they got to cry about how great PS is cause there prolly insecure with there purchase….or just feel a gaming system defines them as a individual.
It is sad that you follow me and respond to my comments if it’s belittling your precious Sony, I’ve even given props to PS now and plan to one day get a PS 4 bur since i don’t praise your cherished system as so you have a need to reassure yourself with anti Microsoft insults that to be honest come off as a jealous 12 year old justifying how his bike is faster…

    Good day sir

  16. I guarantee you if bungie contract hadn’t ended and they made destiny exclusive to xbox your prolly be saying how it’s crap, and that you don’t need it cause you have killzone lol
Same goes with titanfall , before it was announced xbox exclusive all the Sony ponies said “timed exclusive it’ll eventually come to PS.can’t wait” now just cry in anger and say it’s just going to suck.
Called self assurance mixed with denial :-)

    Comment by Mrteapot — January 10, 2014 @ 4:47 pm

  17. Actually its quite the opposite. You started the spewing. And all you guys say the same thing when you are backed in a corner. Actually its just like every fight with a girl, “Oh your immature, Oh you sound like a 12 year old”. And why is it always a 12 year old? So what I’m saying is xbots argue like a female on pms. I just stated facts. You are the epitomy of xbot trolling. Rambling on about useless facts or no facts at all to back up your claims. You have also followed me. I’m just sticking up for ps4 because there are more haters. You xbots can’t take that ps4 is outselling xbone. 360 had no games at the end but you can keep blurting out halo all you want. But i get it you like taking up the anus from MS. You like taking it up the anus from MS.

    Comment by Brian Lee — January 10, 2014 @ 8:01 pm

  18. The funniest part of all this is you’ve been saying all along Killzone this and killzone that and killzone, killzone, killzone. You must really want to play that game. All I said is that I like killzone 2 and 3 for ps3. I have never once defended KZ SF. Xbots assume every ps4 person has KZ SF. Well I don’t and I don’t care to get it. I tried 2 and 3 for $20 a piece but its not my thing. You have been attacking killzone likes its the plague. An you say your not an xbot? Could have fooled me. And I never once said titanfall would suck. That’s just your jaded view of my comments because you are biased. All I said that it is unproven and yet all xbots call it the next halo. How bout we wait for reviews. Im all about great games. While I’m not interested in getting xbone I said I would get titanfall 2 for ps4 if the first one is great. I’ve also said Halo is old news which is not hate but fact. I loved the first 2 and after 3 it started to get stale. So in the words of Ice Cube: “Check yo self befo you wreck yo self!”

  19. “Writes Sony on his penis”
Shhhh brian suckith it baby girl, it’s ok big daddy will protect you from the mean people.

    Comment by Mrteapot — January 10, 2014 @ 9:14 pm

  20. Mrteapot: “Oh don’t insult me cause I might cry like a little bitch, while ballmers taking me from behind! You are a 12 year old because you called me names! *tear*, but your a virgin, you are a girl, blah, blah, blah!” And I’m immature? Lol. Go look in the mirror, if it doesn’t break.
