Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld‘s brilliant web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is one of those addictive pleasures that leaves you entertained and occasionally a bit smarter than before you first started watching. I prefer it to most comedy shows on television because its simple premise, spelled out in the title, is a gateway into a world of warm hilarity and intelligent and heartfelt conversations that reveal facets of the personalities involved you couldn’t find in their performances on film, TV, and the stand-up comedy arena.

The series, sponsored by Acura, recently returned for its third season with Louis C.K. as Seinfeld’s guest. This week, the acerbic comic giant takes out for a hot shot of exquisite java a comedian beloved by geeks the world over: Patton Oswalt. True to form, the two funnymen take off for their destination in a 1981 DMC DeLorean, the car that took Michael J. Fox Back to the Future in three beloved sci-fi comic adventures spanning 1985-1990.

According to Seinfeld in his introduction, the DeLorean was manufactured in Belfast, Ireland, with the financial participation of talk show great Johnny Carson and iconic Rat Packer Sammy Davis Jr., but as history has shown, the car never caught on with consumers for a myriad of reasons. Naturally, the car breaks down after Seinfeld and Oswalt drive it a mere 20 feet. While they wait for the car to get back on the road, they discuss their mutual love of Superman and Seinfeld asks Oswalt, “How would you have killed Superman?” Oswalt’s answer surprises Jerry, and it may surprise you too.

They inevitably get to enjoy some coffee at Oswalt’s preferred establishment, Handsome Coffee Roasters at 582 Mateo Street in Los Angeles. Despite the place having zero brands of sweetener, Jerry and Patton discuss the odd career path of former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann, observations about baseball games, surviving in downtown L.A., and much more. The conversation is gold and I couldn’t get enough of watching these comic geniuses pick each other’s brain.
