The age of video rental stores, save the best and strongest holdouts, is quickly coming to an end. However, a small slice of those memories of browsing titles and the immediate gratification that comes with renting can still be had via the continuous rise of the Redbox rental kiosk.

Each month, Redbox gets a new selection of titles, which are mostly comprised of new Blu-ray and DVD releases that have been available for a month or so to purchase. Much like our new monthly Netflix column, each month I’ll be bringing you the top choices for rent from the automated rental box. Here below, check out my picks and commentary for this month’s best movies to rent from Redbox.

Top January Choices for Rent at Redbox

January 7th

  • Despicable Me 2 (PG) – Get your Minions fix as Gru tries to find his place in the world after forsaking his life of crime and raising his adopted children.
  • Fast and the Furious 6 (PG-13) – Say goodbye to Paul Walker in style as Dom and Brian are called upon to stop a gang of mercenary drivers in exchange for full pardons.

January 14th

  • The Butler (PG-13) – The Hollywoodized true story of a butler (Forrest Whitaker) who served eight American presidents all of whom are played by high profile actors, over the course of three decades.
  • The Family (R) – Robert De Niro’s penchant for mafia comedies continues as he tries to keep his family under control while in witness protection.
  • Kick-Ass 2 (R) – Mark Millar’s comic book sequel gets the movie treatment as Kick-Ass and his new friends go up against a super-villain group led by the former Red Mist.
  • Percy Jackson 2: Sea of Monsters (PG) – Percy and his friends must travel to the Sea of Monsters aka the Bermuda Triangle to find the magical Golden Fleece in order to save Camp Half-Blood.
  • Prisoners (R) – Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) goes neighbor vigilante as he takes the law into his own hands to find two kidnapped girls, one of which is his daughter.

January 21st

  • Captain Phillips (PG-13) – Tom Hanks stars as the titular Captain Phillips in this true story of a man taken hostage when his cargo ship is attacked by pirates.
  • Man of Tai Chi (R) – In this directorial debut by Keanu Reeves (who also co-stars), a young martial artist trained in Tai Chi finds himself in an underground fight club.

January 28th

  • Bad Grandpa (R) – Johnny Knoxville brings his octogenarian delinquent out for a road trip of misadventures, and should fill the space in your soul for some new Jackass shenanigans.
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (PG) – Picking up right where the first film left off, Flint is invited to join other inventors at the Live Corp Company.
  • Don Jon (R) – Porn obsessed Jon (Joseph Gordon Levitt, who also writes and directs) and his girlfriend Barbara wrestle with false fantasies of romance while trying to find true intimacy.
  • Rush (R) – Ron Howard’s bio pic covers the rivalry between two legendary Grand Prix race car drivers (starring Chris Hemsworth) both on and off the track.

I’ll be back next month with a whole new batch of new releases and recommendations.
