Michael Douglas Speaks Out About ‘Ant-Man’ Role; Michael Pena In Talks For Villain

The waves of Marvel Cinematic Universe news continues to crash down on the interwebs like a ton of bricks. Yesterday it was confirmed that Michael Douglaswould star as Hank Pym in Edgar Wright‘s upcoming adaptation of Ant-Man – which confirms that Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang. Hours later, it was rumored that Johnny Depp was in early talks to star as Dr. Strange.
Now we have our first quotes from Douglas talking about why he accepted the role of Hank Pym, plus Crash star Michael Pena is reportedly in negotiations to play a villain in the film. Hit the jump for more.
Let’s start out with what Douglas had to say about the role. In an interview with Reuters, the actor said that he wanted to appear in a film that his kids could see.
“I’ve been dying to do a Marvel picture for so long. The script is really fun, the director is really good. Dylan (the actor’s 13-year-old son) will love it. He’ll have a picture he can see.”
“Sometimes – like (when) they didn’t see you for Liberace – you’ve got to shake them up a little bit and have some fun.”
Well Douglas isn’t that well-known for appearing in family friendly films, so his reasoning is sound. Plus how could we deny such a high-caliber actor like Michael Douglas in a Marvel Studios film. Like I said, it seems everyone is catching on that Marvel Studios is the place to be if they want to appear in a superhero film.
Now on to Michael Pena. The Wrap first reported that he is in talks for a role, with This Is Infamous later reporting the role is that of an unknown villain who goes by the name Castillo. No word yet on if Castillo is an actual villain name or if it is just a front. There are no villains in Ant-Man canon who go by that name. However, this Castillo character is only one of two villains presently known.
Now that Marvel has pretty much cast its male leads, Kevin Feige and Wright have now turned to searching for their female lead. One would assume that Janet van Dyne would appear in the film. But considering that she is associated as Hank Pym’s love interest, that might not happen.
Pena is currently working on FOX’s adaptation of the English drama series Broadchruch. Production for the remake will start on January 7th, but production for Ant-Man will commence on April 30 in Atlanta. So there is plenty of time for Pena to complete his work on the show and move on to Ant-Man.
So what do you think? Do you think Michael Douglas’ reason on finally appearing in superhero movie is a good one? What do you think about Michael Pena as a villain?
