Black Dynamite #1

Black Dynamite #1 (of 4) (IDW Publishing – $3.99) A movie, a cartoon series, and even a graphic novel that came out in 2011 were not enough to contain the adventures of the baddest brother to even stick it to The Man, as Black Dynamite comes to IDW, and he’s come to lay down some truth. Written by Brian Ash (who also wrote that 2011 OGN), Black Dynamite follows the adventures of Black Dynamite, former CIA agent, friend to both whores and orphans, and all around bad ass. If you’ve seen the movie or the cartoon (and you should, they’re both hilarious) should know to expect a humorous take on the blaxplotation films of the 70’s. There’s action, kung-fu, and lots of jokes, and as a fan of black Dynamite, I’ve been looking forward to this. Looking at the preview pages from artist Ron Wimberly, it looks like they are mimicking the style of the cartoon, which gives the book a distinctive look, blending lots of extremes with the aesthetic of a 70’s comic book. This one looks like a lot of fun, and even if you’ve never seen any of the other Black Dynamite stuff that has come before, you’ll instantly pick up on the vibe they’re going for.

Miracleman #1 (Marvel Comics – $5.99) This is a comic that many have been anticipating for half a decade or more. Alan Moore’s (or as Marvel is listing him, the Original Writer) classic run on Miracleman is finally reaching US shores once again, and you don’t have to pirate it or pay an arm and a leg to read it. It’s been a long road since Marvel announced they had obtained the rights to reprint Miracleman way back in 2009, and they have put out a bit of effort into this version of the series. Marvel has re-colored and re-lettered the whole thing, and they have included not just the issues that everyone wants to read, but also some of the even older stories featuring the character. Like so many readers, I am aware of the legacy of these issues but have never read them for myself, so I am interested to see them for myself. I suspect that they can’t quite live up to the massive hype that has surrounded them since they went out of print a couple of decades ago, so I think we all need to temper our expectations. This is a must buy for fans of Alan Moore, or for long term comic fans who have eagerly anticipated this day. I hope it’s everything you hoped it would be.

Astro City #8 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $3.99) Still awesome. How great is it that we’re back to getting Astro City on a monthly basis? Pretty great, that’s how great it is.

Daredevil #35 (Marvel Comics – $2.99) I’m glad to see that Marvel made the right decision to keep Mark Waid and Chris Samnee on the book when it relaunches in a few months. If you haven’t been reading Daredevil, I implore you to pick up the new series.

Rat Queens #4 (Image Comics – $3.50) I’ve only read the first two issues of the series but I was impressed by what I read. This is another fun fantasy series in the vein of Skullkickers, and fans of that series will find a lot to enjoy here. The Rat Queens are your standard Dungeons and Dragons party; Fight, Mage, Rogue, and Dwarf, they’re just an all-female version of it. If you’re into role playing game humor, or you just can’t wait till Skullkickers returns, check this one out.
