RIP Biquette de Mauriac, The Grindcore Goat
  |  @   |

Internet sensation Biquette, the grindcore-loving goat from Mauriac, France, has died. She was 10 years old.

Tales of the concert-going goat spread in 2012 after Biquette (her proper name, which means “goat” in French) made her way to the front of a Wormrot concert being held at Mauriac, the French farmhouse/DIY venue she lived in, and photos of the event were posted online.

Biquette had been a dairy animal from a milking factory for the first half of her life, destined for the slaughterhouse after she could no longer produce milk. But, as luck would have it, the goat was instead given a home at Mauriac, where she would frequent the concerts held at the farmhouse venue.

The goat was particularly fond of grindcore, an extreme metal/punk hybrid known for its short, fast songs, “[Biquette] was most connected to grind,” according to Flo, a former worker at Mauriac, who spoke with the site Noisey, but apparently the goat would also show up for other styles of music.

Seeing as the barn floor where we throw the concerts is wooden, I think that she felt the vibrations in her hooves. The majority of the time she even laid down next to the speakers.

Flo explained that most of the reactions to Biquette’s antics were of amusement and curiosity, but there were some people who thought the goat was there against her will, but apparently she loved being at concerts and around people. One of Biquette’s favorite bands, Wormrot, reportedly would dedicate a song to her.

The goat’s rock and roll lifestyle of excess went beyond the music, as she reportedly had a “live fast die young” attitude, eating cigarette butts from ashtrays and even lit cigarettes right out of people’s hands and drinking alcohol.

Here’s what Flo said to Noisey about Biquette’s favorite food:

What was her favorite food?
Number one: tobacco!!!! In all its forms (butts from the ashtray, lit cig in your hand….)
And more generally a little bit of all the stuff lying around. She consumed a decent amount of the bottom of pots of paint or oil drains too…it depended on the season. She drank alcohol pretty well too, of the sort of all the bottoms of glasses of bottles of booze that people hid in another part of the barn and that she managed to root out.

Biquette passed away in December 2013, but the cause of her death has not been determined.

Do you know when she died, or why?
As far as what caused her death it’s a big mystery. Certain people advanced the thesis of too brutal a change of rhythm after the complete cleaning of the site upon the arrival of the new people. Maybe she was missing scrap metal [Editor’s note: assume this is French for a type of metal subgenre] or something?! No, frankly, we don’t know anything. What’s for sure is that she burned the candle at both ends! This type of biquette normally lives 10 years longer. But “normally” and biquette, that makes two. “Live fast die young!!!”

Upon learning of the death of their biggest fan, the Singapore band Wormrot wrote on their Facebook page, “Good times guys. She was being a sweetheart all the time when we’re there,” while some of their fans left comments about meeting Biquette.

Here below you can see some footage from a Wormrot concert with Biquette in attendance. Also, check out the photo gallery here below of the goat at a Wormrot concert, via the Biquette De Mauriac Facebook page (yes, she has her own page!), and Metal Insider.

It’s sad that Biquette didn’t get to live as long a natural life as is possible for goats, but as least she got to live her life to the fullest as a metal fan. As a factory farm dairy goat for those first five years of her life, she was likely dehorned, kept pregnant and yielding milk (mammals have to give birth to yield milk), spending her days starring at the back of a milking stand hooked up to machines that pumped her milk from her, and confined to a tiny living space (or worse, I won’t describe the horrors right now!). Meanwhile, she was really a metal-loving animal who just wanted to go to loud concerts, drink beer, eat cigarettes, be around people, and be sociable! So, fuck factory farming!!! Sorry, just had to say it, as I don’t think animals should be treated like inanimate objects, and this story of Biquette’s life should show everyone that animals like goats should enjoy the same comforts, so to speak, as pets like cats and dogs. (You can read more stories of rescued goats like Biquette here and here, and you can, if you feel so inclined, donate to help support those goats live a long, happy, natural life in the comforts of an animal sanctuary.)
