What’s the only thing protecting our world and the supernatural world from a catastrophic collision? The answer may surprise you: it’s the employees of a small, quirky pawnshop. Written by Aaron Duran and illustrated by James Sinclair, La Brujeria is an action-packed mystery bag filled with a wild assortment of otherworldly characters including a tough, wisecracking chupacabra!

Althalia Cabrera just wants a simple job. Anything will do, really; however, when she arrives at the Golden Bought Pawn Shop expecting a run-of-the-mill interview, Althalia is hired on the spot by a talking chupacabra. Immediately entering into a reality she never knew existed — one that appears to be bleeding through into the human world — Althalia quickly realizes that she’s in way over her head. Along with handling cannibalistic gnomes, an escaped banshee, the grim reaper himself, and a long returning power long forgotten, Althalia also has to contend with her new day job behind the counter.

La Brujeria is an independent comic done right. Duran has written quite the gem with this series. The plot moves along at a perfect pace combining a healthy dose of humor, action, characterization, and mystery. The story is never boring or confusing; it is rather engrossing and well worth the time investment. The narration is always brief and used only when necessary, while the conversations between characters are captivating and witty.

Completely in black and white, Sinclair’s style of art fits seamlessly with the comic’s concept as a whole. The characters are all clearly distinguishable and are riddled with rough features. The bodily movement and posture from panel to panel needs no written description, as it reveals the story in and of itself.

La Brujeria is a pleasant trip into a world unlike our own. With an engaging and unique cast of heroes as well as menacing and downright scary villains, this is one journey through the unknown worth taking.
