Bryan Singer On ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Character Reveals, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
  |  @   |

A total of 25 different X-Men: Days Of Future Past magazine covers were released this week to commemorate the 25 Anniversary of Empire Magazine. It looks like every character past and present in the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past graced the covers, some of whom were originally thought to be cut from the film, like Anna Paquin’s Rogue, while others were thought to have lost certain aspects of their power. But there are a couple of reasons why we see Rogue get her own cover, and why future Wolverine regains his metal claws (if you haven’t watched The Wolverine, I suggest you give that film a look).

Now, director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg answer those stinging questions about the cover photos, specifically the questions about why Rogue is featured even though she was cut from the film, and how Wolverine came to possess metal claws again. Hit the jump to read those answers, plus a couple of other interesting tidbits that could affect the future of the X-Men film franchise.

About the one cover that reveals Wolverine possessing his signature Adamantium claws again, Singer said Magneto could “reconstitute the adamantium claws… [Wolverine] has a different relationship with Magneto, and perhaps Magneto could forge them.”

When asked why Rogue got her own cover, this how the two responded:

“It was one real sequence in the movie,” Kinberg said. “We felt like it was taking tension out of the main story drive.”
“It does not mean that we won’t see her in the film,” Singer adds. “Also, I hope to make the sequence available on the DVD as she was quite wonderful in it. She is an important part of the X-Men family. I ‘m very pleased she will remain as one of Empire’s anniversary covers.”

But perhaps the most important thing to come out of this interview, was the bits of information concerning X-Men: Apocalypse:

“One thing that interests me is the notion of ancient mutants,” Singer says. “What would people thousands of years ago, without the benefit of science, think mutants were? And more importantly, what would mutants thousands of years ago think they were? Gods? Titans? Angels? Demons? And if such mutants did exist thousands of years ago, what became of them? Did one survive?”

“Age of Apocalypse was one of my favorite stores,” Kinberg added. “We like the stakes of it, and it feels like a story that could impact a lot of our favorite characters in big, dramatic ways. We feel it’s a very different story from Days of Future Past. For starters, it’s a very different villain, and the characters will be in very different places emotionally.”

While all of the X-Men films are in the same cinematic universe, Singer considers Apocalypse to be an X-Men: First Class sequel. He added, “It’ll take place some time after this movie. What happens in this movie [X-Men: Days Of Future Past] brings about what’ll happen in that movie.”

Finally, Singer dispelled the rumors that Magneto would be possessed by an alien in a post-credits scene, which would turn the Master of Magnetism into Apocalypse and lead into the next film.

“That’s not the case, and nor will that particular thing be in the film. People were concerned we were making Apocalypse an alien. It’s odd. I don’t know where that came from.”
