Philip Seymour Hoffman

Esteemed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who won a Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Truman Capote in Capote, was found dead today in his Greenwich Village home in New York City, the victim of an apparent drug overdose, according to The New York Post. He was 46.

The actor, who has publicly talked about his struggles with drugs and had been in rehab several times, was reportedly found by his personal assistant in his bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm.

Hoffman was an actor’s actor, a consummate individual who had a jack-of-all-trades kind of chameleonic feel to all his roles, and there were plenty of memorable ones. His sort of slept-in look, top shelf versatility, and intensity endeared him to the mainstream (he had appeared in the second theatrical installment of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire) and to the fringes (Boogie Nights, Capote, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, etc). There was a collective reverence for the man, his work and his art.

This is an immense loss for the Hollywood community, film community, and artistic community. All of us at Geeks Of Doom are saddened by the loss of this heavyweight titan of cinema.

UPDATE: Hoffman’s family has released the following statement [Source: NBC New York via Vulture]:
:

We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.

Hoffman has three young children with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, who he was in a long-term relationship with.

UPDATE: Lionsgate, which is the studio behind The Hunger Games film franchise, has released a statement [Source: Collider]:

“Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.”

According to Collider, Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was filming the next installment, Mockingjay, which will be released as two films, had completed most of the work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I with seven days remaining to shoot on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. It’s being reported that the scheduled release dates for the films — Part 1 at November, 2014; Part 2 at November 20, 2015 — will hold and that Hoffman’s role will not be recast.

Stay tuned for further news as it develops.

RIP – Philip Seymour Hoffman
