Trailers From Hell Takes On ‘Groundhog Day’

For Groundhog Day today, we proudly present — what else? — the trailer for the 1993 Harold Ramis comedy Groundhog Day, which starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

The trailer here comes from the site Trailers From Hell, a site in which trailers for films (classic, cult, and otherwise) are run with some brief commentary wraparounds from esteemed directors or other people involved in the biz. Screenwriter/director Chris Wilkinson (Nixon, Ali) is at the helm here for this one, in which he pokes fun at the repetitive narrative of the film, in which the character played by Murray finds himself having to relive his day over and over again, with of course the typical comedic results one would usually find in a Murray-led vehicle such as this.

Check out the Trailers From Hell version of the movie trailer here below.

The film was a big hit when first released over twenty years ago and in a way, represented the last of the “Bill Murray character” style movie comedies, in which his character usually had a kind of slick, charming, smarmy, sharp thread throughout them — the dry-witted, fast comeback kind of guy. Films like Stripes, Meatballs, and Ghostbusters exploited this kind of Murray character to the hilt, something which was crystallized and completely refined by the time he got to Groundhog Day.

If you’ve never seen the film, or want to revisit it today, you can watch it through Amazon’s Instant Streaming service. You can view the trailer here below… again and again and again if you like. The trailer, like the film itself, is a rut one doesn’t mind getting stuck in.
