Batman Prequel ‘Gotham’ Casts The Penguin, Alfred, More
  |  @   |

The upcoming Batman prequel TV series Gotham gives us a look at the origins of some of the well-known characters from the DC Comics property. The show will follow Commissioner Gordon (a role recently filled by Ben McKenzie) back when he was a rookie detective, a young Bruce Wayne as he mourns the loss of his parents, and the rise of some of the city’s most infamous villains.

A few more actors have now joined the show’s cast, including for notable roles Oswald Cobblepot, who is of course better known as the Penguin, and Wayne family butler Alfred.

Robin Lord Taylor (Assassination of a High School President, a recent episode of The Walking Dead) has been cast in the role of the Penguin, who’s working for gangster Fish Mooney in the prequel and is described as a psychopath with the “brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal” who hides a “sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.”

Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon, Dog Soldiers) will play Alfred Pennyworth, described as a “tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London” who serves the Wayne family and now takes care of Bruce Wayne after the murder of his parents.

Zabryna Guevara plays Captain Essen, the boss of Detective Gordon at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad, who’s described as someone who “balances the worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop.”

Lastly, Erin Richards (The Quiet Ones, Breaking In) is set to play Barbara Kean, an emergency room doctor and the fiancee of Jim Gordon.

The show is written and executive produced by Bruno Heller, who is responsible for creating HBO’s Rome and The Mentalist.
