Eternal Warrior went through quite a change in issue #5, sending the series from the modern day into the year 4001. The first four issues set up the story of Gilad Anni-Padda, the titular Eternal Warrior, who for generations was the servant of the Earth.

Now we see his mission in the future is to protect the people, which he does in this issue by going to a town full of slaves. Always trying to do the right thing.

It seems a little odd to me that there was this big a change in the series after the first four issues. I was just getting a feel for the characters when they send the main character into the future and add Gilad’s granddaughter as a side character. It’s a lot to take in when you’re really just getting used to the cast. On the other hand, it’s a bold choice, and I’d rather see a series take a few chances than just have it sit back and be like every other book.

What you get here is an interesting comic that isn’t afraid to try something different. I’m curious to see what writer Greg Pak does not only with this current arc but also future arcs.

It’s easy to pick up this issue and figure out what’s going on, which you can’t always say about new series. Even if you haven’t read the series before, this is as good a spot as any to start. Valiant is putting out a lot of great comics that you may be missing. Don’t miss out on this one.
