Doc Savage #3 is where this title REALLY gets going. Without even realizing it the first two excellent issues have, while we thought they had just been stand alone stories, set up a great story that really gets moving in this issue.

Author Chris Roberson really kicks things up a notch in this issue. The first two issues have each taken place in a different decade, and this one is no different. Taking place in the early 1960s, Doc is ready to reveal the secret of his longevity and seeming lack of aging. But, of course, some people don’t want that secret revealed; they want it for themselves and for their own personal gain. As if dealing with that wasn’t enough, an old enemy turns up to literally take away everything Doc holds dear to him.

Artist Bilquis Evely continues to amaze. He’s doing something that’s really unheard of right now in comics. And that is turning in a consistent, high quality, solidly drawn book on a monthly basis. This guy CAN do a monthly book without cutting any corners art-wise. There’s no shortcuts. No skimping on backgrounds, no huge flubs on the scenery and/or technology of the time period that the book is set in. Evely turns in some great art here, bringing all those great Doc Savage pulp covers to life in comic book form.

I don’t know what else I can say to make you pick this book up. You need to. Even if you’re not interested in Doc Savage in the least, or have never heard of the character before, that’s OK! Roberson and Evely have put out a great comic book that’s also an AWESOME Doc Savage comic.
