Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the long-awaited sequel to 2005’s Sin City, is coming to theaters this Summer, with the first full-length trailer for the film expected to hit the web tonight.

In the meantime, the first look photos from the film, adapted from the Frank Miller graphic novel (Miller gets a co-directing credit once again), have been released and you can see them here below. The photos show Jessica Alba as Nancy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny, and Mickey Rourke as Marv.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in 3D hits theaters on August 22, 2014.

The images first appeared in EW, who interview the co-directors about the sequel, which sees Alba and Rourke’s return, while Gordon-Levitt is new to the Sin City universe. (Spoilers below if you’ve never seen the first Sin City.)

Jessica Alba’s Nancy Callahan is still dancing at Kadie’s, but she’s changed since John Hartigan’s (Bruce Willis) death in the original 2005 cult classic. “She’s out for revenge,” says Miller, who co-directed the film. “She is sick of being treated “” as she puts it “” “˜as a piece of ass.'” Robert Rodriguez, who also returns to co-helm the project, adds: “You see a little girl in that first film. By the end of this, she’s the avenging angel.” Alba’s acting work has taken a backseat to other endeavors in the past few years, but Miller assures us that she is “eight times the actor [that she was] when I did the first film.”

Levitt plays Johnny, a “hard-luck gambler,” a new character created by Miller for the film. Not much is known about Johnny yet, but Rodriguez gave a tiny hint about what to expect:

“He beat the wrong guy at poker,” teases Rodriguez. “It begins the journey that describes the title of his story: “˜The Long Bad Night.'”

If you’re not familiar with Miller’s A Dame To Kill For graphic novel, you should check it out in paperback or for the Kindle. Unlike the first film, the sequel looks like it will take a chance and branch out a bit from its source material.

Check back here at Geeks of Doom later tonight to watch the new trailer!
